With Veteran’s Day coming up I have chosen an item from our military display. This American Legion uniform cover belonged to G. W. Cassidy. Mr. Cassidy was a member of the American Legion for more than 50 years and was a volunteer here at the historical village. The American Legion began in 1919, a veterans organization focusing on veterans, servicemembers and communities. Today there are 12,000 posts worldwide and over 1.6 million members. Our neighbor to the north, Calvary Falls Event Center, is hosting their annual Harvest Craft Fair tomorrow - Saturday, November 2nd from 9 - 3 pm. Looks like there will be lots of vendors to check out!

We had our annual state welcome center visit from the Iowa Tourism Office this week and they gave us this nice certificate saying we are a "Certified Iowa Partner Welcome Center." We opened as an official Iowa Welcome Center 35 years ago this year on May 1, 1989. We've had the pleasure to host many visitors from near and far since we opened as a welcome center. In the last year (and most years since we've opened,) we had visitors from all 50 states and 23 foreign countries! Almost all of them mention how beautiful Iowa is and how friendly.

Our featured item this week is a pioneer painting by S. C. Baker. Samuel Baker was born in 1874 near Villisca, Iowa. He was a carpenter by trade and used leftover wood to craft frames for his paintings. After his retirement he dedicated more time to painting. Samuel Baker’s artwork was featured in the book “Twentieth-Century Folk Art and Artists”, and his painting “Niagara Falls Ice Flow” is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. See you next week.

If you like Hallmark Christmas movies like I do, one of our Iowa shirt suppliers is offering this sweatshirt and allowing us to take orders! It comes in sizes small - ###L and the price is $24 no matter the size. Colors are either gray with red print or red with white print, are Tulex 50/50, and are unisex sizing. If you would be interested in ordering one, please message us with your name, color, and size by next Monday, November 4th. Once we place the order next Monday, it will take about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks to receive the shirts. We are also looking at ordering Hallmark Christmas movie mugs so let us know if you are interested - $16 each, 15 ounce. Thanks much and enjoy the warm October weather!

Suzi, the card designer/maker, said to put her normally $3 handmade cards for Halloween/Fall/Thanksgiving in the 25% off area also. (We also have a few fall wooden blocks for fall in the 40% off area not pictured.)

Reminder to mark your calendar for out two upcoming inside Holiday Welcome Center Farmers Markets from 3:30 - 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 21st and Thursday, December 12th. The grease bucket was an essential item for every pioneer wagon heading west. Made from animal fat or tar grease was used to lubricate the wheels and axles, keeping the wheels in place and reducing the friction. Buckets were usually made of wood and hung on the rear axle of the wagon. The demand for axle grease created the first commercial petroleum trade. Have a great week!

We now have IA Girl caps from the same Iowa company, dkhandmade, that make most of our other caps, a couple of our Iowa t-shirts and gray Iowa towels. Some are ponytail style and some are regular. Treat yourself or great for a gift!

Now that the Welcome Center Farmers Markets are done for the season - except for Holiday markets on Thursday, November 21st and Thursday, December 12th, we are going to focus on new items in the gift shop. For sticker collectors, we recently received the "official" Loess Hills National Scenic Byway sticker. The timing was great for all the people taking a drive on the hunt for fall colors or just to enjoy the sunny weather.

A huge thank you for your support of the 2024 Welcome Center Farmers Market! We had a great 15th season with fantastic vendors and customers. An extra thank you to everyone who came out for trick-or-treating last night! We lost track of the count but know it's the most trick-or-treaters we've ever had. :-)

Mark your calendars for the two inside Holiday Welcome Center Farmer Markets yet this year. The first will be on Thursday, November 21st from 3:30 - 6:30 pm. The second will be on Thursday, December 12th from 3:30 - 6:30 pm. Many of the vendors that you have enjoyed in 2024 will be there including Seeds to Harvest, Hodge Greenhouse, Cleo's Homestead, Mary's Potato Salad, Duncan's Poultry, and Hillside Garden & Country Cottages. More will be added as they are confirmed.

Yummy! Check out all the goodies Seeds to Harvest is going to have at the market today including huge variety of baked goods including pumpkin bread, a fall popcorn flavor (which I've had and is delicious!) and for produce egg plant, green peppers, a few tomatoes, assorted winter squash and their microgreens. Can't wait to see you this afternoon!
