Her equine, trail riding, horse loving, traveling and camping experience caused Tina Mae to design a few things needed by all trail riding and camping enthusiasts. Saddles tack and camping equipment to name a few. In 2009 Tina Mae designed her first saddle the TnT Trail Blazer with Hereford/TexTan. She has since improved her design and now offers her TnT Trail Adventure Saddle and matching accessories made by Tucker. Tina Mae’s most recent line of tack, the TnT Blazin Trail Saddle also with matching accessories is built by Circle Y. . She has also designed saddle pads for Reinsman. Her years of trail riding, trailing and camping experiences led Tina Mae to create storage equipment and trailer mounted boxes, all designed for convenience and space efficiency. Her line of TnT Camp Kitchen and Supply Boxes are perfect and can be added to “already there space” to almost any horse trailer. A lot like Charles Goodnight’s chuck wagon! Tina Mae’s love of horses, trail riding and horse folks extends beyond saddles, tack and camping equipment. She has helped other organizations and horse related businesses and even Was Co-Host on a Trail Riding Radio Show. Tina Mae likes to say she wears more than a few hats all related to horses, trail riding, camping and horse folks, because she loves those people, horses and that world. Why rope halters?????
The knots are NOT for hitting facial nerves!!!!! They just give the halter shape. Otherwise it would just be a piece of rope. I don’t know who started the idea that rope halters are somehow harsh and specifically designed to hit nerves but that is absolutely incorrect.

The true beauty of a rope halter is that when you are not pulling on it it is barely even there. It IS the lightest halter you can use!!! But the real magic is that if I am facing the horse and I lift my right hand out to my right the horse can feel the fiador knot move slightly to his left and he can follow that feel and yield his shoulders to his left. We do this demonstration with people with their eyes shut holding onto the crown of a rope halter and then the crown of a flat stable halter. The flat stable halter does not transmit the feel until we actually PULL on it. Where if you have a rope halter, with the rope tied in and no snap, you can move that fiador knot a quarter of an inch and the horse can feel it. It does not hurt, and it is not sharp but they can simply feel one side of the halter coming into slightly more contact and the other side of the halter move away. If you vibrate the rope just a tiny little bit the horse can feel the vibration transmit from the rope into the rope halter. All the metal hardware, the heavy snap, the light weight lead rope, and the wide web halter just do not transmit those tiny little pre-cues.

We use the rope halter because when in neutral it is barely there, and if we give the tiniest cue, the horse can feel it, but if we need to escalate we can!
In a flat stable halter it takes a lot more pressure for the horse to initially feel anything, and if we have to escalate the pressure is dispersed over a wider area so we can’t escalate as much.

You can relate this to leg cues. If you have a horse that is seriously behind the leg and old enough to know better, ideally you would just barely lay the hair down with your calf as your first aid, and then escalate hard and fast to make them learn to appreciate and pay attention and be responsive to the light calf! The stable halter equivalent would be if your first leg aid was a medium hard bump but the hardest you could do is just a slightly harder bump. If your horse is naturally a little on the dull side they would start to ignore that pretty quickly!!!

Once someone learns to use a rope halter correctly I’ve never seen them want to use anything else. The people who do not like the feel of a rope halter are the ones that try to use it the same way they have always used their flat stable halter, and surprise surprise- it doesn’t work.

In Missouri

We have been in contact with the Fire Management Officer of the Mark Twain National Forest regarding the upcoming prescribed burns within our district.

The FMO has provided us with the map below which highlights in red the areas that they will burn this Spring. They are planning on burning a total of just over 5000 acres over the next several weeks, possibly starting this weekend.

We will try and make additional posts regarding these burns as it becomes available. With these large burns, the United States Forest Service brings in crews from all over the United States to assist with these burns. As a matter or fact, they have a Helitack/Hotshot crew stationed in Rolla right now during Spring fire season. This team can quickly respond to fires within and around the National Forest.

With these fires, they produce an extremely large amount of smoke. If you live nearby and become concerned, DO NOT hesitate to call 911. We will respond and check it out. With it being so dry, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

VS OUTBREAK - NEW REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER MISSOURI

Regarding the recent Vesicular Stomatitis outbreak, cases have been confirmed in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nebraska and most recently, Utah. Missouri Department of Agriculture rules restricts movement from an area within 10 miles of any quarantined facilities. Quarantines last for 14 days after the onset of lesions developing in the last affected animal on those premises. The time from exposure to the onset of clinical signs is 2-8 days. Any animals entering Missouri must not have been near any of those quarantined areas within 30 days prior to entry.

Horses entering (or re-entering) Missouri from any AFFECTED STATES listed above will be REQUIRED to have a permit issued by Missouri Dept. of Agriculture within 15 days of entry along with a required exam for a health certificate written by an accredited veterinarian from that state, as well as a current, negative Coggins.

Horses entering (or re-entering) Missouri from any UNAFFECTED STATES do not require a permit but do require a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry and a current negative Coggins.

Health certificates for horses entering Missouri must have the following statement:

“The animals are free of visible signs of contagious, infectious, or communicable disease. The animals have not been exposed to VS and within the past 30 days have not been within 10 miles of any site under quarantine for VS.”
