March 13, 1825: Lafayette visits Izard's Plantation in Charleston, SC.
⚜️Lafayette arrived in Charleston on March 13, 1825, and visited the Izard family’s Elms Plantation, currently part of the Charleston Southern University campus.

Side note to The Lafayette Trail & Julien Icher, we think this would be an excellent spot for a beautiful Lafayette Trail Marker! 🥰

“Ralph Izard inherited The Elms after his father's death in 1749. During the Revolution he provided financial support to the Patriot cause. He also served as a foreign diplomat, advisor to George Washington, and US senator. The Elms, which remained in the Izard family for generations, was established here by Izard's great-grandfather (also named Ralph), who settled in SC in 1682.”
⚜️⚜️
“The Elms, an inland rice plantation on the headwaters of Goose Creek, was owned by the Izard family for more than 150 years. In 1704 Ralph Izard (d. 1711), member of the Commons House of Assembly, bought a 250-acre tract here, expanding it to more than 500 acres. His son Ralph II (d. 1743) also served in the Assembly and on the Royal Council. The first to plant rice at The Elms, he enlarged it to more than 2,700 acres.”
