Congratulations to the Highland County Public Library and Tomi Herold! Thanks for being an amazing community resource.

A message from Tomi Herold:

Today marks twenty-five years since I started work at the Highland County Public Library as the new Library Director. I’m honored and grateful to still be here, serving this community that I’ve grown to know and love. I want to express my gratitude to all the amazing and thoughtful people I’ve worked with along the way who have shared a common goal, to make our little library extraordinary. This includes library board members, county leadership, staff, volunteers, community partners, and patrons. I’m blessed to love the work that I do, and that hasn’t wavered in the last quarter century.

I hope that you will join me in 2025 as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Highland County Public Library. You have an exceptional library with a compelling story behind it and I’ll be sharing some of that story at the library’s Annual Public Meeting on Sun., Jan. 12 at 2:00 p.m. The meeting will be the kick-off of our year-long celebration of the past, present, and future of the Highland County Public Library.

Food Pantry. Mobile Food Unit. What's the difference?

The Highland County Department of Social Services (Hcdss Monterey VA) in conjunction with the programs' coordinators created this helpful flyer with the 2025 dates in Highland County, Virginia!

If you need a Food Pantry application, they can be obtained in the HCDSS office at 158 Courthouse Lane in Monterey. An application can be mailed or emailed - they can be contacted at 540-468-2199.

Food Pantry applications and income limits may also be obtained by contacting Kate Wilke at 540-468-3374.

It's important to note, you can complete the application AT the Food Pantry if you wish as it does not need completed beforehand. Food Pantry volunteers can help you!

The Mobile Food Unit does NOT have income limits or an application and is open to EVERYONE!

The Community Holiday Concert this Sunday, December 15th at 3 pm will feature the Highlands Community Orchestra, Highland Community Choir, and Glory Bells hand bell choir.

The concert is free at The Highland Center, with donations appreciated. Come out for an afternoon of music and merriment, and stay for a cookies and punch reception afterwards!

Are you a crafter with a residence or business address physically located in Highland County who has wanted to sell your handcrafted items at the Maple Festival but can’t commit to four days?

The Highland Center and the Highland County Chamber of Commerce are once again hosting a Highland County Artisans’ Shop to showcase local talent and for you to sell your crafts at The Highland Center in Monterey. This requires a 5-hour shift commitment for one day of the 2025 festival.

The Highland Center is happy to offer this unique holiday spotlight on Hanukkah, known as the Jewish Solstice, Festival of Light, as we enter the darkest time of the lunar year.

The Highland Tourism Council is sponsoring a meeting for all current or future Highland County lodging businesses tomorrow on Monday, December 9, 2024 from 5 - 6:30 pm at The Highland Center at 61 Highland Center Drive in Monterey. Light refreshments will be provided.

Current lodgers with physical locations in Highland County are highly encouraged to fill out a brief survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/7YCL7ZT.

Those who complete the survey AND attend the lodging meeting will be eligible for a chance to win a $30 Gift Card to Claire's Cakes & Café!

Collected data from this survey will be reported in the aggregate and will be used to help the Highland Tourism Council make future decisions with Transient Occupancy Tax funding.

A document for those considering opening a short-term rental will also be presented at the meeting.
