Should you trust hotel reviews you see online?

Here’s my take as a travel advisor:

Yes, you can take reviews into consideration, but its risky to base your whole decision off the perspectives of strangers.

I’ve been to hotels that had average reviews, but they ended up being perfect for me and my travel style.

On the flip side, I’ve been to hotels with great ratings that just didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Taking the time to understand what you truly want and value from your travel experience is a great place to start so you don’t get confused or swayed when you read reviews.

As you prepare for the end of your amazing voyage, here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth departure:

The Night Before

Receive Your Info:
Expect your stateroom attendant to deliver luggage tags and the “As You Depart” guide. These tags will match your departure time for the next day.

Pack & Prepare:
Pack your larger bags and leave them outside your stateroom by 11 p.m. (if doing traditional disembarktion). The crew will handle them overnight, so you can travel light the next morning. Don’t forget to keep a small carry-on with your essentials, including travel documents and valuables.

Check Your Account:
Review your onboard account through the ship’s system and resolve any discrepancies at the Guest Services Desk.

Day of Departure -

Enjoy Breakfast:
Fuel up with a delicious breakfast on board before you disembark.

Departure Lounge & Disembarkation:
Find your assigned departure lounge based on your luggage tag. The “As You Depart” guide will provide all the details. Relax with refreshments and let the kids enjoy the family zone with toys and games. When your group is called, crew members will guide you to the gangway and your luggage. Proceed through customs and immigration checks, then head to your airport transfer, taxi, or meet your family.

Express Departure - For the Quickest Exit:
Opt for Express Departure to be among the first off the ship. Carry your own luggage and enjoy an early start to your journey.

Today, we're embarking on a private catamaran sailing adventure that we booked on our own, not through the cruise line. Here’s why we chose to do it this way:

See You Later, Luggage:

🌴 Travel Tip: How We Handle Unexpected Changes 🌴

We all know that travel can sometimes come with unexpected hiccups. Recently, one of our trusted tour operators reached out to my clients after 9 PM on the night before their eagerly awaited excursion with the following message:

"One of our guides has been injured and will not be available tomorrow morning. Would you be available on another day or in the afternoon? If not, we may have to cancel unless other people can move (I've sent the same message to the whole group)."

My clients were on a cruise and were unable to change this excursion to another day or time. (Remember, this message was sent by the tour operator AFTER 9 PM on the night before their scheduled tour. So maybe you have a tour tomorrow, maybe you don't.)

Thankfully, my clients are flexible and were able to quickly find another activity to enjoy their day at that port. Despite my immediate request for a cancellation and refund, the operator initially did not honor it. Their exact response was:

"I'm sorry but it was never confirmed that we were cancelling the guided tour."

As your dedicated travel advisor, I understand the importance of hassle-free travel experiences. I promptly called the booking company and advocated on behalf of my clients. After a thorough discussion, I successfully secured a full refund for them.

I strive to minimize the headaches that can arise from last-minute changes. Travel can be unpredictable, but I’m here to ensure your journeys remain as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Way to go !! I love your NEW "Worry-free Shore Excursion" policy! 🌊✨

Everyone has probably heard the horror stories about travelers who booked a tour outside of the cruise line and been left stranded because they didn't make it back to the ship on time. Or perhaps something happened with the port, and the cruise ended up arriving late or not stopping at that port altogether. (That happened to me in Alaska!)

As a travel advisor, I am always looking out for the best interests of my clients. Sometimes the tours offered by the cruise lines aren't a great match for my clients. Either they are boring, have way too many people, or have terrible reviews.

Now Viator is offering peace of mind for my cruising clients that are looking for additional shore excursion options. My clients won't lose money if there is an issue with a port of call (either the ship is delayed or they have to change ports). Additionally, in the very low chance that a client misses the ship, Viator will arrange for the necessary transport to the next port-of-call (up to $1000 per passenger). 🚢💼

I have a bit of a controversial take on luxury travel.

I’m a pretty big believer that luxury travel isn’t always 5-star resorts and first-class tickets (although both of those are nice!).

Luxury can be as simple as having someone else plan and book all the details for your trip so there’s no stress on your shoulders.

Luxury can be an itinerary tailored perfectly to you, without you having to lift one finger.

Luxury can be as simple as seamless logistics, where all the details are planned and organized for you without any stress or wasted time.

Just know that whether your idea of luxury is the 5-star resorts or it’s all of the things I listed above, I’m a DM or email away and ready to assist!

THE MOST EXPENSIVE TRAVEL MISTAKE I SEE PEOPLE MAKE?

(THE VERY SAME ONE I HAVE MADE MYSELF...)

Not purchasing travel insurance.

I used to believe that travel insurance was a waste of money. It's true.

However, after my daughter's hospital stay during our trip to Belize, I can assure you that it's worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY.

In addition to covering medical expenses during your travel, which can quickly add up when you are out of the country and have to self pay for every single item and service BEFORE you receive it, there are several other key reasons why investing in travel insurance is crucial.

Cancellation or Interruption: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes unexpected events occur that can force you to cancel or cut short your travel plans. Travel insurance offers financial protection by reimbursing you for non-refundable expenses such as flights, accommodation, and pre-paid activities in case of covered events such as illness, injury, or a family emergency.
