Still missing Carnival Mardi Gras! If you have not sailed on her, I highly recommend it! For all of us on the West Coast used to the 3 and 4 night ships. While they are lovely, they are definitely the younger brother and sister of the Carnival fleet. Mardi Gras is beautiful, packed with good food, good drinks and plenty of fun!

I could spend all day at Summer Landing relaxing by the aft pool.

The #1 question I get asked when it comes to cruising…. “Is the drink package worth it?” A better question would be “Is the insurance worth it?”

My last sailing I met a passenger who had a medical emergency on board and needed to be taken to the medical center to be evaluated, have an EKG, chest x-ray, lab work and some IV fluids. Fortunately they were ok and were able to continue on their cruise, with careful monitoring and strict instructions to stay on board, rest, hydrate, then be medically cleared before their flight home. I can definitely say their drink packaged was utilized more for bottled waters and Gatorade than cocktails. 😆

On a serious note, shipboard medical centers do not take insurance plans and medical bills need to be settled before you disembark the ship. Had they had to be medically evacuated or medically disembarked from the ship, this medical bill would have run into the tens of thousands of dollars and more, based on the severity of illness and medical team needed to bring you back to the United States. Make sure you understand what it covered and what is not with your health insurance plan before you travel overseas.

Before you think “What is the likelihood this will happen to me?” I have yet to be on a ship that has not had a medical emergency on board. I have been on cruises where someone had to be airlifted off, turned around and gone back to port, full steam ahead to the nearest port to drop off a passenger, ambulances waiting, and even this cruise a different passenger was loaded up on a fast rescue boat and taken to the nearest large hospital for medical and even a call for available blood donors on board. Slips, falls, sprains, cuts, bruises.. A lot can happen on vacation (especially with those drink packages 😆) instead of getting the drink package.. make sure you get the insurance!

And yes… this person did have travel insurance so these expenses will be reimbursed to them and they traveled knowing they had the best care at sea.

Careful what you comment on the internet. It may be quoted in articles. “Sassy yet supportive” is probably the most accurate description I have had on me.

Cruising ducks is a very popular past time on cruises. I think it’s fun, people hide ducks around the ship for others to find. There are entire groups dedicated to this. It’s well discussed in the sailing groups before, during and after the cruise. People find joy in it. I don’t participate, I have, but it’s just not my thing. It also doesn’t affect me or my vacation and it has never ruined my fun. The controversy people over this is just insane. If you are on a ship with 2000 - 4000 other people, you have live and let live.

Have you done a Chef’s Table dining experience on board a cruise? Last week we got to experience an amazing 7 course meal on Carnival Mardi Gras! Do you tip extra for your stateroom attendant? Faruk in the Mardi Gras was the most amazing cabin attendant ever! He took great care of us when our a/c broke. I will miss his beautiful smile and friendliness! We left him a little party to say thank you!
