So the other day, we were doing a few laps at a king fishing area. Had a few king bites, landed one, lost one and had a very nice one got chopped in half by a giant barracuda. Then, we had a bite on the propwash bait that I’ve been waiting for for years! Anyone that has king fished with me knows one of the cool things about live bait slow trolling for king mackerel is the bycatch you encounter along the way. Many days, you don’t catch any kings but you have the most incredible day of fishing catching everything else! If you’ve king fished with me even once, you know I’ve been talking about the elusive bycatch of sailfish and blackfin tuna for years and have been frustrated that it seems to happen to everyone but me. Sometimes even right next to me, someone will hook a sail. 🤦♂️ Well, it finally happened! My friend, business strategist and shooting partner (we both attended our first USPSA match together) Josh was standing back there near the propwash rod and we had a huge boil that got us excited, then a slender, black bill slashed through the water before the rod bent and the reel started screaming. Josh was so close, he got a great view of it and after grabbing the rod and maneuvering it so as to not tangle the other lines, he turned around and said calmly, “It’s a sail.” He, like a true gentleman, gladly handed the rod to his uncle Chris and the fight was on. Stretched us out really far multiple times, we had to chase it down for a while. The whole time I was doubting it was a sail because it NEVER JUMPED! 😂 But when we finally got the fish alongside the boat, it was a beautiful sight. Somehow we managed to get our hands on the bill and tail and got a quick video of us idling the fish to a strong release. What an incredible blessing that was!
