West Virginia University’s Jackson Hole Photography Workshop is an intensive field course that explores the diverse and remote region of northwestern Wyoming.

West Virginia University's Jackson Hole Photography Workshop is a 10-day intensive field course that explores the diverse and remote region of northwestern Wyoming. Among the locations visited during the workshop are Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, the National Elk Refuge, the historic Mormon Row homestead site, an authentic western rodeo, and a variety of neighboring locatio

ns. Daily excursions exploring this stunning region are complemented by darkroom and digital work sessions, critiques of work in progress, gallery visits, and evening presentations. The workshop covers a broad range of photographic practices and principles with an emphasis on instruction targeted to the individual level of the student. Lectures and demonstrations will cover basic camera operations, beginning to advanced Adobe software techniques, alternative camera use, mixed media processes and more. Primary instruction is done with digital SLR cameras; however, students may also be exposed to 35mm film cameras, medium and large format film cameras, and mixed media processes. In addition, there will be several presentations and technical demonstrations by professional artists working in the field and a tour of the galleries in town. Required readings and discussions on the history, culture, and environment of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, will add to the students’ exploration of a new geography. The Jackson Hole Photography Workshop is a 3-credit upper-level art elective for School of Art and Design majors and is included in the school’s new Global Positioning Studies (GPS) initiative. It also fulfills a 3-credit requirement for Photography minors and a Humanities elective for non-majors. The program is limited in size to insure a close working relationship with the faculty and a significant amount of one-on-one attention. No photographic experience is required, and camera equipment is provided as needed.

"Prior to the trip, we read about the national parks in the area and the history surrounding them. We learned about the animals, ecosystem and environment, the history of Native Americans, and about the impact of humans and development on both animals and the environment. This knowledge was all very new to me and I think that it was important that we read it before going, as it gave us some insight. So much to share from another incredible workshop! This crew of students was up for anything and hiked farther than ever before. They experienced blizzard like conditions one day and 80 degrees the next. They swam in ice cold glacier fed water and climbed on snow covered 11,000 foot peaks. They learned how to defend themselves with bear spray and vastly improved their photography skills. Most importantly, they made lifelong memories and friendships.

We had a special visit this year from West Virginia University Photography and 2017 workshop alum, Victoria Lilly Photography, and her sweet dog, Thor. Victoria fell in love with the Greater Yellowstone area and is now the Head Wrangler at the CM Ranch in Dubois, WY. She’s also quite an accomplished photographer and shared some of her great work with the group.

I'm excited to announce that the 2022 workshop is now accepting applications! The course will run June 16-26, 2022 and is being offered through WVU's Education Abroad office, which makes the cost of tuition for three credits just $150 for all students, including non-traditional, non-resident and non-WVU students. There are additional fees associated with the course which cover accommodations, ground transport, nearly all of your meals, daily excursions, guest speakers and photography supplies.
