I am a marine ecologist with 30 years experience working in sustainable, environmentally sound molluscan aquaculture. Grassy Bar was founded in 2009 when I "bought the farm" and got beached on the back bay with a bevy of bivalves. Much to my relief my son Charles came to help me, and to share my passion to coax our beds to flourish with the succulent shellfish.

Yesterday we received the unfortunate news of a sewage spill into Morro Bay Harbor. Thankfully, it has since been contained and health officials jumped in quickly to mitigate public access to the contaminated water. However, out of an abundance of caution and a dedication to uphold our high standards of safety & quality, we will be entirely closed for harvest through the next 10 days and possibly even through the following weekend as we await cleared water quality samples. We apologize to all the folks we know this will affect and we hope to be back shucking with you soon!

There's something ultra-special in this photo.... can you spot it? We found a pearl while shucking this lovely young lady's order today and she was so excited to bring it home!!! We've found pearls out on the farm before, but our store crew thinks this might be the very first time they've found one while shucking an order at the store. What a magical surprise 🧜🤍

BIG NEWS 📢💥 Our very first batch of Grassy Bar Midori variety oysters is arriving at the Shucking Shed this weekend!!

Midori Pacific oysters originate from a more southern region of Japan than Miyagi Pacific oysters and are genetically closer to the wild Pacific oyster. We believe this first cohort of Midoris came from seed that is likely only on its second generation removed from wild spawning brood stock!! We've found that Midoris grow significantly slower than Miyagis in our water conditions, leading to beautifully deep cups with angular ridges and very dense, creamy meats with a lot of umami. For now, Grassy Bar Midoris will be available in limited quantities exclusively at our retail store alongside our classic Grassy Bar Pacific Oysters (Miyagi variety) in our small size, meant for raw half-shell preparation. We hope to offer them for our wholesale accounts & in our larger sizes as we learn more about their growing needs and have higher quantities available! Can't wait for you to try them soon 🦪🌊🧜

This part-time position involves shucking, preparing, and serving oysters while interacting with the public at our retail storefront on the weekends.
Although we are not currently hiring for our farm, there is potential for this position to expand into an aquaculture technician position in the future.
No previous experience is necessary, but is always appreciated. We can teach you how to shuck... we need you to already know how to show up with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and a willingness to work as part of a tight-knit team.
$18/hour plus tips

If you were ever wondering about our company namesake, it comes from the eelgrass covered tidal flats which surround our farm.

Eelgrass is a flowering species of plant, unlike most other common types of algae present in the bay, and provides many benefits to water quality, habitat diversity, and natural beauty!
