A 2 hour job turns into a 4 hour job and a trip to Menards real fast in a 200 year old house.

We’ve added a reverse osmosis system with 6 stage filtration to provide filtered water for our guests. We replaced the old faucet at the same time.

While installing, I saw that the sink drain was leaking badly due to a joint failure resulting from incorrect installation.

Now we have the reverse osmosis system and new sink drains.

Left panel is up and fixed in place. Right panel cut, lifted to second floor and for confirmed. We had to cut outside in the rain so the back of the panel is too wet to glue up tonight. So we used the extra time to hoist the toilet. 🙂

Well, the plan tonight was to put in the final two Agean panels. Since nothing is straight or square in this house cutting them to fit has been an extreme challenge. This panel needed 5 cuts, only one was straight. The others were either curved, or not perpendicular to the other.

We had the left panel (the one with the three holes for the shower faucet) all cut perfectly. The top was too tall. We dropped it when we were taking it out to grind off some material. It’s destroyed. We used the panel intended for the right side to finish the job tonight.

Holding out hope that Agean has one of these in stock, although I think they make most of their stuff to order. If not, we are going to have to get creative for the right side.

This was probably the most physically demanding part of the job so far, maybe tied with getting the tub in place.

The only edge of that back panel that is straight is the bottom. The other 4 sides are all slightly skewed and not necessary straight lines, because the walls and ceiling aren’t straight.

The clearance all the way around is about 1/8”. It’s super heavy and it was a chore to get in place, but so much easier than ceramic tile.

The adhesive will cure in about two days and we can start working on the sides!

We are using pre-formed panels from Agean Bath and Spas. They provide a continuous surface that looks and feels like ceramic. We had to be extremely careful cutting the back wall. We created a full sized cardboard template since only one of the five sides is straight (bottom) and the sides are not perfectly square to each other. Did I mention this stuff is very thick and heavy?

Next step is dry fitting. Once the size and shape are good it will be fastened to the wall.

Over the last three days we’ve put 2 coats of primer on all walls and ceiling and two coats of paint over the last three days. Linen closet and shelves got painted also. Next up is the tile surround for the tub, then floor, followed by vanity, trim, then all of the finishings.

Massive progress this weekend and today. The room was completely rewired. We had an outlet installed by the window for fans, etc. added a motion and humidity activated vent fan and a motion activated light in the closet.

Then the final drywall pieces where installed and first coat of tape and mud. A couple days of sanding and mudding and we will be ready for primer and paint.

One piece of drywall remaining. Going to wait until the new wiring is ran before enclosing the wall. The bathroom and the back bedroom are all currently one circuit. Going to run a dedicated circuit to the bathroom with a gfi breaker in the panel, you know, for safety.

Tonight’s only task was preparing this wall. You know what’s square and plumb in a 200 year old timber framed house? Nothing.

So I figure I could choose two of three, plumb, square, or flat. Square wasn’t happening without complete deconstruction. Plumb and flat it is!

That’s a lot of shims.

Lots of work over the last couple days.

The stairs to the second floor are too narrow and steep with a 90 degree turn to take building supplies up and down them.

So when you have to move bathtubs, toilets, vanities, sheets of drywall, you build a gantry with an electric hoist over the hatch between the first and second floor.
