CRC-10502’s calf put on an amazing show right at the end of Saturday’s 9:00am trip! Breaching and pec-slapping until we had to leave!

Today we found a humpback calf that survived a killer whale predation attemp. Killer whales leave behind very distinct tooth rake marks, and this calf was covered head to flukes.

Mom, CRC-19867, must have fought them off with potentially the help of other humpbacks off the coast of Mexico where the calf was likely born. Even mom has a few rake marks on her flukes. This is her first known calf.

The calf breached for over an hour, and the mom joined in for just two breaches herself.

We got wonderful looks at the CA140Bs, a pod made up of 5 killer whales.

6 species of cetaceans total for our trip today: killer whales, humpback whales, a gray whale, Risso's dolphins, Pacific white-sided dolphins and bottlenose dolphins!

Today's encounter with super playful killer whales hunting sea lions in Monterey Bay!

Photos from today’s amazing trip with northern right whale dolphins, Cuvier’s beaked whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, humpback whales and black-footed albatross!

We were lucky to get 4 surfacings from the rarely-seen Cuvier’s. The dive times ranged from 22-27 minutes for the pod of ~8 individuals. Rare to see them for more than one surfacing!

Killer whales pursuing a California sea lion on 11-29-2023.

The sea lion attempted to take shelter under the boat several times before the killer whales were ultimately successful.

Killer whales were in a porpoising mood yesterday (11-29-2023)!

The pod of ~7 (including Frosty!) was hunting a sea lion and repeatedly launched themselves out of the water near the sea lion. They seemed to be prolonging the hunt as they easily could have struck the sea lion each time the porpoised, but were just porpoising near it and allowing it to escape for over an hour.

One of the most aerial and fascinating encounters we've ever had with killer whales!

Fun Humpbacks 8-20-2023

All this fun stuff happened today! We had a breaching humpback calf on the morning trip plus lunge-feeding humpbacks on the afternoon trip! Why aren't you on a boat? #getonaboat

Baird's Beaked Whales 6-9-2023

Rare Baird’s beaked whales today! We had a group that included mom & calf pairs swim right towards the boat (last clip)! There were three different groups in the bay taking relatively short dives for this species (between 7-16 minutes) which allowed us to get several looks at whales we know so little about. Their longest recorded dive on record is 81.7 minutes and they can dive nearly 2 miles deep. So thrilled to find this species today!!

Porpoising Killer Whales 3-30-2023

Today: one of the craziest killer whale moments we’ve ever seen!! Over 20 killer whales comprised of multiple family pods attempted to hunt two adult gray whales. We believe the adult grays were strategic and survived by making a run for the beach and pausing to flip upside down to protect their bellies from the killer whale’s assaults. The one other time we've observed killer whales attacking an adult gray whale was EXACTLY 10 years ago: 3-30-2013. There was no evidence to suggest they were successful during that predation attempt either. This moment today, captured by passenger Marian Acquistapace, will never be forgotten! Thanks so much for sharing the video!! #getonaboat

Southern Resident Killer Whales in Monterey Bay

Southern Resident killer whales in Monterey Bay this afternoon! L pod!! A super rare encounter with most of the members of L pod traveling through Monterey Bay looking for salmon - successfully! We spotted one of the whales with a salmon on its head! Look closely at the end of the video. #getonaboat
