In 1843, after a spirited competition with nearby towns, 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 was chosen as the county seat. Its central location and growing population made it the perfect hub for judicial and administrative activities. Today, Mount Carroll remains a beacon of history with its 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 (𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝟏𝟖𝟓𝟖) standing proudly as the centerpiece of the town.

Take a stroll around the county to see historic monuments like the 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, dedicated to the brave Carroll County residents who served in the Civil War. From early settlements to lasting tributes, every corner of Carroll County tells a story.

Explore the historic streets of Savanna, Lanark, Shannon, Milledgeville, Chadwick, Thomson and Mount Carroll, where 19th-century architecture still stands strong.

Carroll County has always been more than its landmarks. It’s the 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚—the farmers, tradesmen, and pioneers—who shaped its history.

𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦 is a cherished holiday destination with a 𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 and 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙨. Founded in 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟔 by 𝐍𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 and his father 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧, this tree farm has been a part of countless holiday celebrations for nearly 𝙎𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙉 𝘿𝙀𝘾𝘼𝘿𝙀𝙎!

The original farm, located where the first nine holes of the Lake Carroll Golf Course now sit, flourished until 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟏 when the development of Lake Carroll began. At that time, they than transitioned to the current site on Payne Road, continuing their tradition of growing 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒔 for families far and wide.

Today, the farm is lovingly run by 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 alongside their son Mark, daughter-in-law Shanna, and grandsons Cooper and Maddex. Together, they represent four generations of tree farmers who have kept the Dollinger legacy alive. Delighting visitors with their cheerful smiles as they hand out 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒅—a little sprinkle of holiday wonder for every family.

Visiting Dollinger’s isn’t just about finding the 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒆; it’s about stepping into a story. 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, the farm’s talented decorator, creates a winter wonderland, while wreath makers 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐲 and 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲—affectionately called the “𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔”—add festive charm to every home with their custom creations.

The Dollinger family’s commitment to 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 is unmatched. For families who’ve been coming here for decades—and even those traveling from as far as 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐠𝐨—the farm represents more than holiday preparation. It’s a place where memories are made, stories are shared, and the 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑪𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒔 comes alive.

Would you believe that 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 was named after 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍?
The honor of naming the County was bestowed upon Isaac Chambers, the 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘳 in the County. Since Charles Carroll was one of the political heroes of the day, and since many settlers were originally from Maryland, Mr. Chambers decided to name the County after him in 𝟏𝟖𝟑𝟗.

in 1832, Charles Carroll—an Founder and Revolutionary—passed away. At age 95, he was the last living, and only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. The fierce advocate for religious freedom rose through colonial government as a delegate to the Continental , a framer of the Constitution, a member of his state legislature, and one of the 1st Senators in — where he championed the . In so being, Carroll was a force for revolution who holds a remarkable place in American .

Carroll’s grandfather, also a Catholic, emigrated from Ireland in 1688, seeking freedom from English discrimination. However, shortly after arriving in Maryland, Catholics were restricted from receiving higher education, voting in elections, and holding office.

Thus, his grandson at 10, moved to Europe for schooling. He then returned to Maryland in 1765, coinciding with protests of the Stamp Act. Carroll joined fellow colonists in questioning the principle of taxing a population unrepresented in Parliament and wrote a series of essays refuting the tax.

Reflecting on this period, Carroll wrote, “To obtain religious as well as civil liberty I entered jealously into the Revolution, and observing the Christian religion divided into many sects, I founded the hope that no one would be so predominant as to become the religion of the State.”

By 1774, he was named to the Maryland Convention and helped convince fellow citizens to support independence. He then signed the Declaration, pledging his life, fortune, and sacred honor. Though not as popular as his contemporaries, his championship of individual freedom is well remembered. As his obituary read:

“The last of the Signers is dead! The only remaining link which connected this generation with the past, with that illustrious race of statesmen, philanthropists and patriots, the founders of American Independence, and the benefactors of the world...is broken.” But “The brotherhood of glory is reunited above.”
