Schubert's Bakery

Schubert's Bakery Schubert's Bakery. A bit of history! The cafe is no longer open for business. You can find
Schubert's food at M & M Cafe, Monticello, WI. Owner Jim Schubert.

For more than 100 years, loyal customers have flocked to this historic bakery first opened by The Olson Family in 1911. Wisconsin native, Jerry Schubert purchased the bakery in 1980, and expanded service by introducing a classic diner menu featuring hearty country breakfasts and down-home comfort food. This charming restaurant with its original tin ceilings, cozy wood booths, checkered floor, and

old-fashioned soda fountain has become a local institution, where people travel from miles around for a wonderful meal and a taste of Schubert’s famous Swedish Rye Bread, Norwegian Lefse, Rosettes, Fry-cakes and other traditional favorites. Now there’s even more. Today, Jerry Schubert’s daughter Kathleen, former owner of a popular Twin Cities catering company, is bringing her world-class cooking talents and keen sense of style to the kitchen to refresh Schubert’s menu. At Schubert’s, everything is made the old fashioned way, from scratch, the way food was meant to be cooked. No cans of veggies. No frozen meats. No additives, fillers, or preservatives. We make all of our sauces and dressings in-house. Our breads and bakery items are all hand-crafted and baked in small batches. Our soups are simmered to perfection. We use the highest quality ingredients we can provide. And we take pride when we partner with local businesses and growers, feature artisanal food producers, and organic products. We know you can taste the difference! Enjoy!

This is a special place...

Speaking in an exclusive interview last year, Jerry Schubert said he was dedicated to finding someone who could take his beloved restaurant’s past and stretch it well into the future.

“There is an, I don’t know, originalism and hospitality here,” Schubert said. He said it was “terribly important” that one of Mount Horeb’s most iconic eateries stay alive.

“This can be a special place,” he added.

Schmock says he agrees – about the restaurant and the entire community – wholeheartedly. He says he and his brother hope to finish remodeling and open their doors to the public by early December.
