Why does Charleston have such world class fossil hunting? Read the (simplified) explanation from Charleston Center for Paleontology

Why is the Charleston Embayment such a hot spot for fossils? Here are a few (simplified) reasons:

1. Phosphate – Areas rich in phosphate often contain densely mineralized, better preserved fossils. There is also often a higher density of fossils present in these areas. The phosphate mining industry in the late 1800s to early 1900s exposed a large number of fossils, resulting in the area becoming one of the best-known fossil localities on the east coast.
2. Ongoing Exposure – New fossils are continually exposed due to both natural (erosion from the ocean, rivers and weather) and manmade causes (construction, dredging, etc.).
3. Stratigraphy – For millions of years, the area was underwater and home to a variety of sea life, whose remains became deposited in the layers of the ocean floor. During the Pleistocene, sea levels dropped significantly, bringing Charleston above water and allowing for the arrival of land mammals. Today, you can find fossils of both marine and terrestrial animals. Those layers of sediment represent multiple time periods, providing insight into not only the arrival and/or disappearance of some animals, but also the evolution of others.

This is one of the coolest fossil finds I’ve seen in a while. Meg (maybe angustidens) with a split tip! This kind of pathology is caused by disease, injury, or other factor resulting in a defect. Fossils showing pathological damages are highly sought after; great find Bob!

The Horry County Museum has a documentary series about our waterways. They are also hosting a fossil show in July where I’ll be in attendance with a fossil quiz (think shark teeth!!) with prizes for the participants. Check out their doc series on their website or catch it on SCETV

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV.
In 1718, 17,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant, or barony, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter, Belle, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 12th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. For a list of films, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail [email protected].
