It is New Year’s Eve, and we look forward in hope to a new year filled with potential, but we also know there is uncertainty. A review of 2013 reminds us of the changes a year can bring—some good, some very painful. What will happen in 2014? We opened this month by asking “What is the source of our hope?” And through Scripture we have seen God in Jesus meeting our deepest needs. Now on this New Year’s Eve we look once again to Jesus—the Savior who has come and who now reigns in heaven until the day he will come again.

Words can only begin to describe the power and glory of the ascended Savior. He is the Lord of life. John describes Jesus as standing in long flowing robes. Long robes were worn by royalty, or at times of celebration. They were a sign of victory, security, and work completed. A person fleeing danger, or a worker could not been cumbered with a long robe. But Christ stands in flowing robes.

There is no threat to His Kingdom; His redemptive work is fully accomplished. Children of this victorious King have eternal security. As we enter the New Year, may we all declare, “My only comfort in life and in death is that I belong to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ!”

Prayer Thoughts: In a world of uncertainty, we thank You, Lord, for the comfort, hope, and peace we have because we belong to you. Thank You for being our security and allowing us to share in Your victory.

Poor?

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. - Psalms 23:1

They didn’t know that they were poor,

A sister and two brothers,

They had a place that they called home,

A loving father, and a loving mother.

And every day, they played away,

Spent hours in the sun,

And every night, they said their prayers,

When the day was finally done.

Their lives weren’t filled with toys and such,

They knew not, what they were,

The house, the barn, the yard, the creek,

Was all that they’d prefer.

Raised on love and kindness too,

Godly forgiveness from within,

The joys of being family,

They did not know of sin,

A world more perfect than most know,

For it’s not what you own,

It’s living life in peace and love,

And not feeling alone.

If all the world could know this joy,

Contentment with their space,

That love and peace would make this world,

A more thankful, and better place.

Recently, while helping to move our daughter and her family to Cleveland, we had the opportunity to visit the Kirtland Temple

Even though it was a weekday and very rainy and gloomy outside, the tour guide was welcoming and seemed to act as if he were expecting us. Touring with us, were people from the Restoration Church, as well as an L.D.S. family.

I was unable to climb the stairs to the second and third floors with the group, so this gave me an opportunity to peacefully enjoy the surroundings in the main foyer. I have always found the simple but elegant beauty of the arch at the top of the Temple foyer window inspirational with its sunray pattern. I watched the rain drops hit the window and run down the thick glass, as if they were God’s tears being shed for the many separations and divisions that have occurred since the Kirtland era, among his saints.

When the others returned, we all entered the main floor sanctuary where Christ appeared so many years ago. There was a holy hush as we sat down in the pews. After the presentation, the tour guide said that he felt led to ask us if anyone knew how to play the hymn “The Spirit of God.” Terry and an L.D.S. woman both said they would try, so Terry played the first verse and the woman played the chorus.

The spirit was rich as we all joined in to sing the words that had been identically preserved for so many years in each of the different factions of the restoration. It was obviously equally dear to the hearts of all of us, as tears filled our eyes.

After the tour, it occurred to me that even though we all went out in our own directions, we each carried God’s light to offer to the world much like the sunrays in the window, and I whispered a fervent prayer that all untruths would disappear one day and that we would all sing together again someday soon, in Zion.

( P.S. The Remnant Church has been invited to the Emma Smith Hymn Sing at the Kirtland Temple in July 2018 {day to be announced} We hope that many will choose to attend.)

Telling the Signs of the Times

When it is evening ye say, the weather is fair, for the sky is red; and in the morning ye say, the weather is foul today; for the sky is red and lowering. O hypocrites! Ye can discern the face of the sky; but ye cannot tell the signs of the times. -Matthew 16:2-3

By the time you are reading this, we will have passed through the holiday season of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. Hopefully yours was joyous and healthy, for you and your family as we remembered all we have to be thankful for and especially for the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ! Do you remember the two months leading up to this time? How many catalogs, solicitations, and cards did you get in the mail? We got up to twelve catalogs in one day! How many emails did you receive about sales and “perfect gifts”? These were certainly “signs of the time” of our worldly year, weren’t they?

Are we as aware of the signs for the impending return of our Lord? I remember as a young member in Sunday School class being very alarmed with all the talk about the end, wars and rumors of wars, great tribulations, fleeing for safety to Zion, false prophets, false Christs and on and on. Are some of us still the same way?

Jesus is our teacher, our example and our Savior! His words bring comfort and peace. He has said, “Behold, I have told you before, Wherefore, if they say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth…For as the light of the morning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, and covereth the whole earth; so shall the coming of the Son of man be…And they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven, with glory and great power. And who treasureth up my words, shall not be deceived.” (Matthew 24, selected verses)

Treasure up the words of Christ and you will not be deceived! Watch the signs of the times that are all around you and prepare for our Lord’s coming. He has said the end will be victorious!

Almighty God, thank you for the wondrous treasure of thy word. Grant us the blessing of alert minds and willing hearts that we may be ready for the coming of your Son!

Let’s concentrate on happiness this new year coming up,
And thankfulness and kindness to fill our “needy” cup.
We’ll look for hope, and joy, and peace, with love mixed in between
To make a new and better year, two thousand and eighteen!
Do you suppose that we can find ways to work and all agree
To give and take at different times and make our choices free
Of any bitterness or hate or coveting or shame,
And when we see results go wrong, that we are part to blame?
Methinks we need to find some time to get down on our knees,
To realize, through thankful prayers, that He’s the One to please!
We need to show our gratefulness to live in this great land.
We need to ask him for his help to keep it free and grand!
We need to show humility, instead of haughty pride.
We need to love our neighbors all, for peace to still abide.
Each one of us can do our part, wherever we may be,
And with his help, each step we take, can be Eternity.
With him, our Savior, so he’s said, in words both strong and true,
We only need to listen well.
I’m going to try; will you?
