So whatâs the little colored glass thing on the dining table?
Itâs a knife rest. Their use is traced back to the early 18th century and possibly the late 17th century. This was probably initially just a piece of wood in the times of Henry the eighth, but from the eighteenth century we know that some enterprising person started to design what we now consider proper knife rests in pairs.
They simply are used to keep utensils off the table or table cloth. I have a small collection of them. They are made in different materials such as metal, granite, crystal and pressed/cut glass. I really wish that theyâd make a roaring comeback.
There are still some fall dates available at the Stella Vista!
