On October 15, 1966, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore became the FIRST National Lakeshore!

The 1960s brought about an era of increased outdoor tourism to the Great Lakes Region. Amid increased tourism and development, there were growing concerns about preserving shoreline for the enjoyment of the American public. As a result, a survey (the Great Lakes Shoreline Recreation Area Survey) was introduced to identify shoreline areas to add to the National Park Service. Pictured Rocks was one such area!

Wind and waves kept us off the Pictured Rocks today. Our crew decided to be productive on their unexpected blow day and spent a couple hours picking up trash along the beach. 😎
