Bear looking for a meal at Calaveras Big Trees

In July at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, for our first CA Naturalist class reunion, I gathered with other folks who had taken the CA Naturalist course. After our potluck dinner, we each took turns telling what our most exciting sighting had been during the past 6 months. I began telling about looking up from the book I was reading under our apple trees and watching a grey fox casually walk through our Arnold yard in the middle of the day. All of a sudden, we looked across the picnic ground road and there was a bear. We all slowly walked closer and watched for a couple of minutes as the teen-age-sized bear dug into the thick bark of a large Sequoia tree. Eventually, the bear heard a car approaching and wandered off into the forest. What we each had chosen as the most exciting thing we'd seen during the past months became the second most exciting thing.

Here is a video of a black bear digging into the Sequoia named the Dowd Tree.

Yosemite National Park

Check the road closures before you head up to the mountains or Murphys.

El Portal Road (continuation of Highway 140 into Yosemite) will remain closed through this weekend due to a rockfall. The only access to Yosemite National Park is via Highways 41 and 120 from the west.

The large rockfall, which occurred around noon yesterday, caused about 4,000 tons/60,000 cubic feet of rock to fall. About 150 feet of road is covered in 15 to 20 feet of debris; part of the road's paved surface and retaining wall is damaged.
