Fort Heiman...right here in Calloway County! If you want to learn more be sure to attend the event at Fort Heiman hosted by the National Park Service on Saturday, October 26th.

Have you heard of Fort Heiman located in Kentucky? This little-known Civil War fort was occupied by Confederate and Union forces throughout the Civil War. On October 26, 2024, Fort Donelson National Battlefield will be hosting a special event at the Fort Heiman unit managed by the National Park Service. Leading up to the event we will be posting various stories about the use of the fort, its importance in the war, and about the people who lived at the fort. If you are interested in reserving a spot or learning more about the special event you can learn more at https://www.facebook.com/share/do1QhXztFuTjSiP7/.

Fort Heiman was a Confederate and Union fort that served a lesser known but important role throughout much of the Civil War. Fort Heiman was originally constructed by Confederates to protect Fort Henry. Fort Henry was placed in a poor position because of Kentucky neutrality. After CSA General Leonidas Polk invaded Kentucky, Confederate forces began building Fort Heiman on a high bluff in Kentucky to protect Fort Henry.

Confederate soldiers abandoned the unfinished fort as Grantโ€™s army approached Forts Henry and Heiman. After the fall of the two forts Union forces took control of them and used Fort Heiman as a base of operations to secure the area. The 83rd Illinois and 5th Iowa Cavalry spent time at the fort.

Union forces constructed a new Fort Heiman further inland and did not finish the Confederate portion of the fort. Because of limited troops and two attacks on the town of Dover, Federal forces abandoned Forts Heiman and Henry in the summer of 1863. When they left, they destroyed most of the landward facing part of Union Fort Heiman. Although the fort saw limited use throughout the war, it was an important staging ground to ensure that Union armies in the Western theater could move and fight effectively.

Image Description: Print from Harperโ€™s Weekly of Union gunboats attacking Fort Henry. Ft. Heiman is located on the right side of the river.
