Pedal pub will soon be ‘kroozing’ downtown Muskegon social district

MUSKEGON, MI – A 10-person party bike will soon be “kroozing” downtown Muskegon with the city’s recent approval of a new ordinance allowing for pedal pubs.

The human powered “Koozie Kroozer” operated by a young Muskegon entrepreneur is expected to be the first “pedicab” to operate under the city’s ordinance that allows drinking aboard multi-person bikes as they are propelled around city streets.

The ordinance approved last month came at the urging of Scott Sittser, who plans to start offering tours on his Koozie Kroozer beginning Friday, Sept. 17.

“I think it definitely will bring some smiles to Muskegon and that’s what I’m most excited about,” Sittser told MLive.

The pedal pub will be the latest addition to Muskegon’s downtown scene, where drinks from participating establishments can be taken along sidewalks and gathering areas within its social district.

Alcohol brought by customers can be consumed on pedal pubs. But the idea is they can stop at watering holes and other attractions as they pedal about town.

City Attorney John Schrier told commissioners it was his understanding that drinks purchased from social district establishments can be taken aboard pedal pubs as long as they remain within the social district boundaries.

Sittser, 25, has been working on his business plan for more than a year. He said he’s received invaluable help from Grand Valley State University’s Muskegon Innovation Hub and Muskegon Community College’s Lakeshore Fab Lab.

Sittser is continuing to put the finishing touches on his pedal pub, which started only as a frame, fashioned from a Volkswagen Beetle, and has seats and pedals for 10 and room for up to two additional riders.

A driver – who oftentimes will be Sittser – has a spot on the Kroozer too and is in charge of steering and braking.

Help with its construction – and the development of such Koozie Kroozer promotional products as drink koozies and coasters – came from the Fab Lab, he said. As a former MCC student, Sittser said he paid $25 per year to use the lab’s high-tech fabrication tools like CAD programs and 3-D printers.

He was even allowed to park the Kroozer in the lab staff parking lot so he could try out various prototypes.

“They just have so many cool opportunities in that place,” Sittser said. “That’s not recognized enough.”

The Innovation Hub helped him with his business plan. And he turned to MCC’s Studio M class for student help creating his business logo, which uses the same color pallet as Muskegon’s “Watch Us Go” campaign.

The Kroozer will be rentable by the hour, though Sittser said he will suggest two-hour tours for clients at a total cost of $240. He said he can tailor trips to partiers’ preferences, such as stops at particular establishments.

He’s developing relationships with restaurants and bars that are expected to offer special deals and guaranteed seating to his clients.

And Sittser has other amenities, such as birthday banners or specialized advertising placards for businesses renting the Kroozer for employee outings.

So far, response has been enthusiastic, he said.

“So many people are lined up to book this thing – it’s exciting,” Sittser said.

I want to make this more transparent and open, as I immensely value any and all feedback with this as well as my business plans. Help me connect our community and promote local businesses!
Here is an open and transparent fundraiser that we have launched to the public as a way to help pay for some of the expected start-up essentials to having a good time on board the Koozie Kroozer.
So, in doing so, we thank you in advance, after-donation AND forevermore for any help sent our way! Even if that just means a simple share/re-posting it or even giving our page a like. Every bit helps.
Some of the expected essentials that your very valued donation money will go towards include: (open to any other suggestions or ideas as well)

A nice cooler that can store enough beverages for up to 12 people. Not sure how big of one will be needed to accommodate that, but we will be doing more research on this before purchasing as well as contacting other party-bike companies to see what they have used to account for this. The benchmark in coolers, YETI, has some options that would ideally be large enough for me to provide water, soda, and juice out of, as well as the guest being able to put their drinks in. A big benefit with all things considered, but comes at a big cost as well at $1,299.
Some sort of sound system. At the moment, I have a JBL Charge 4 on it's way, as it seemed as a great deal for the price I found it at (used for $100 vs $180 new) with the idea in mind to upgrade in the future to a full sound system (which could range anywhere from $500 to $3,000, I just don't know enough of what to expect in paying for this yet) but, built into the canopy one way or another.
Speaking of a canopy, we still are working to get the most competitive quote possible on one. For competitive purposes I will not reveal the quoted cost. The proper support posts are built into the current Koozie Kroozer, however, the remaining structural work needs to be designed and then created. Ideally, with enough over-head space to store a purse, backpack, or whatever a passenger chooses. Also, there is a need to incorporate sponsorship advertising space into the canopy frame and vinyl cover.
