1. John Shippen- the first African-American to play in the U.S. Open in 1826
2. Dr George Grant- receives a patent for the modern wooden golf clubs in 1899.
3. Ann Gregory- the first African-American woman to play in the USGA Championship at the US women’s amateur championship in Illinois in 1956.
4. Lee Elder- the first African-American golfer to play in the US Masters tournament in Augusta National in 1975.
5. Pappy Stokes - the first African-American caddy “on the bag” of a winner at the US Masters in 1938 (fun fact- He is also@still holding the record for youngest caddie! He was only 17 years old!)
