Here at NEST, we respond to protect sea turtle nests when they’re laid by turtle moms, we help hatchlings get safely to the sea, we educate the public (including through these Facebook posts!), and we also have another role that we haven’t shared as much about — our volunteers help get stranded turtles to the help they need!!!
We had a call recently on the NEST hotline from a visitor, informing us about a stranded dead sea turtle, in Town of Nags Head, NC, covered in seaweed and grasses. As the Hotline responder was getting ready to put a call out for a volunteer, the visitor called back to say that the turtle had moved — it was alive!!!
Unfortunately, the turtle was missing its left eye and most of its face on that side, plus it had a skull injury as well. It was truly a miracle that it was alive. NEST volunteers David and Barbara responded.

We discovered that this was a juvenile Kemps Ridley, a critically endangered species, that is now being helped, all because a person on the beach stopped to help and called NEST!!!

Thanks from the turtle family at NEST!

Remember, if you visit the beach, never go near a sea turtle or shine lights on them at night.

FLAT and DARK
