Today we celebrate the courage of Carolista Fletcher Baum, who on August 15, 1973, took immediate action to save the sand dunes we now know as Jockey's Ridge State Park.
While her three children played on the dunes on a regular basis, on Aug 15th, 1973, the unexpected arrival of bulldozers threatened the landscape of the dunes. In protest, Baum stood in front of a bulldozer to stop the removal of sand. From that moment, a new movement ignited to save the dunes and in 1975 Jockey's Ridge was officially designated a state park.
We are forever grateful for the courage it took to preserve and protect this significant geologic feature in the Outer Banks!

Save the date for the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration of Jockey's Ridge State Park June 5-8, 2025!

Have you heard of Hatteras Island's infamous "Cora Tree"?

The legend of the witch tree in North Carolina tells the scary tale of Cora, an accused witch who disappeared before they could light the match to burn her at the stake.

How this thing ends up back in the same spot every summer and where he goes in the winter is a mystery to me but really cool to see the Wanchese Marina resident manatee back again.

Today we feature the Annie L Vansciver. She was a steamship that had a very eventful life. It spent the latter portion of its life as a ferry making a 4 and a half hour trip to the Outer Banks. Taking a ferry used to be the fastest way to get out to the Outer Banks, and that was the case in the 1920s when Annie could be found in NC waters. That all changed in 1930 when the Wright Memorial Bridge opened, replacing a 4 and a half hour ferry ride with as little as a 30 minute drive. Just four years later Annie made her last trip due to the changing times.

The 294 ton steamer was built in Philadelphia in 1897 for commercial use. The name Annie L. Vansciver was its original name, a prominent family from New Jersey, but that wasn’t the only name the vessel possessed. In 1918 Annie was sold to the U. S. Navy and served as a transport vessel in Boston under the name USS Samoset. After its service the steamer was sold in 1922 to the North River Line and reclaimed its original name.
