On November 7, 1984, David Deuel set the IGFA All-Tackle and Men’s 24-kg (50 lb) Line Class World Record with this massive red drum. Deuel was surf fishing from the beach in Avon, North Carolina, when the 42.69-kilogram (94-pound, 2-ounce) record fish struck the cut mullet he was using for bait. After a 45-minute fight that took him nearly a mile along the beach, the fish was weighed and measured (57” long with a 38” girth). Deuel's catch of a lifetime still stands 40 years later.

What a difference a day makes. Strong overnight winds have kicked up the ocean bigtime and no one is fishing yet. A flock of bird watchers visited early this morning. Winds are NW at 21 knots. Ocean water temp 63 degrees, air temp 50. High tide 11:21 a.m. Low tide 6:17 p.m. Stephen Lambert of Nags Head caught this 20 - inch-long SPECKLED TROUT yesterday afternoon.

‘Takes a village’ The injured manatee that was spotted in Kitty Hawk Bay waters Oct. 29 has found its way back home to Florida. A multi-agency team scooped up the injured (prop wounds) and possibly sick manatee from a creek off the Tar River near Greenville Monday. Jennette’s Pier Marine Mammal Coordinator Marina Doshkov was first on the scene when the animal was spotted in Kitty Hawk. Once it was safely transported to SeaWorld Orlando, she was overjoyed. “Sending a huge thanks to all our volunteers and locals who helped keep an eye on this animal,” Doshkov said. “It takes a village!” Although several additional members of the North Carolina Aquariums assisted in the rescue, all activities were performed under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife service permit, according to Jill Sullivan, central region assistant marine mammal stranding technician for the aquariums. “They are permitted to capture and transport manatees.” Additional Aquariums staff who assisted were Emily Christiansen, head veterinarian, Lori Westmoreland, associate veterinarian, Heather Broadhurst, veterinary services coordinator and John Cece, volunteer. Decent SPOTTED SEA TROUT bite this morning. Also catching SPOT. The ocean is flat and 62 degrees. Hardly any wind making it seem warmer out. Winds NW at 7 knots. High tides 9:39 a.m. and 10: 09 p.m. Low tide 4:24 p.m. Lots of dolphin and brown pelican around.

Nana's Seaside Rendezvous -- Brooke Kirk, a lifeguard at the Outer Banks Family YMCA, checks on her LittleFreeLibrary.org located at the base of the north ramp at the pier. She launched the project in memory of her mom, Dorothy, who would have been 98 years old this week. "She loved reading, loved books and loved the beach," Brooke said.
