Who doesn't love a manatee?!

While we may not have any manatees here at the NCARI, it is hard not to celebrate these special little sea cows.
Having no natural predators, Manatees have never had to develop a sense of fight or flight -- this means there is NOT A SINGLE MEAN BONE IN THEIR BODY.

Tag your favorite manatee lover in your life!

Happy !

Let's learn about the loggerhead sea turtle today!
This species is the most common nester in North Carolina. Loggerhead hatchlings in North America head to the Sargasso Sea and spend years in the sargassum habitat. We don't see them again in coastal areas until they are larger immature turtles.

Adult loggerheads weigh between 200 and 440 pounds and measure up to 3.5 feet long!

All sea turtle species face threats. What is your favorite way to protect the ocean and the animals that call it home?

Sea turtles aren’t the only turtle species to lay nests at Cape Hatteras National Seashore!

Many species of freshwater turtle call this area home as well. Some common species include Yellow-Bellied Sliders, Eastern River Cooters, and Common Snapping Turtles. These reptiles are often seen crossing roads in the spring and early summer in search of suitable nesting sites on land.

👀 Please keep your eyes open for the smaller creatures that call this place home!

January 21: The STAR Center has received over 50 new cold-stunned sea turtle patients over the past two days. In order to make space for all of these turtles, the STAR Center will be closed to the public.

Thank you to the tireless N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) volunteers and Cape Hatteras National Seashore biologists out in the field and the STAR Center staff and volunteers for caring for all these patients.

At this time, we do not need any supply donations. Visit the North Carolina Aquarium Society for other ways to support the STAR Center.
