Double Red Flags 🚩🚩 September 23, 2024

Double red flags are flying again today in Nags Head.

All swimmers are 👉prohibited👈 from entering the ocean due to hazardous conditions and dangerous rip currents, making conditions life-threatening for swimmers and ocean rescue personnel.

Digging holes at the beach = a hidden danger!
It might seem like harmless fun, but digging holes in the sand can quickly turn dangerous.

⚠️ Every year, tragic accidents happen when sand holes collapse, trapping children and adults.
🏊 Large, hidden holes also slow down lifeguards and ocean rescue teams when every second counts.
🐢 During nesting season (May-Sept.), these holes become deadly obstacles for sea turtles and their hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

Safety Tips:
Keep holes shallow—no deeper than knee height.
Always fill them in before you leave the beach.

If you're heading to the beach for Labor Day weekend, please remember to be respectful of the local wildlife, especially the sea turtles who are still nesting and hatching right now. Some friendly reminders:
🚤 While boating, be aware of surfacing sea turtles and other marine life that may be in the area
👣 Leave Only Footprints: remove all personal belongings, furniture, and trash from the beach each day
🔦 White lights from flashlights & cell phones can scare off nesting turtles and disorient hatchlings
⚠️ Holes on the beach are hazardous for people and wildlife. Fill in holes and flatten sandcastles at the end of your beach day

Digging holes in the sand is more dangerous than it may seem.

🕳️ Fatal sand collapses occur in holes just a few feet deep. Children and adults should not dig holes deeper than their knee height.

⛑️ Ocean rescue personnel and lifeguards must be able to drive on the sand day and night to quickly provide emergency services to those in need. Large holes in the sand can be challenging to see and are dangerous obstacles.

🐢 Sea turtle laying and hatching season runs from May through September. Holes in the sand become fatal obstructions for female sea turtles laying nests on the beach at night and hatchlings heading out to sea roughly 60 days later.

If you dig a hole, please fill it in before leaving the beach.
