Why are some barrels colored red in the center?
Because it's pretty.

Because wine evaporates from the barrels during aging, cellar workers need to add more wine (aka 'top off the barrels') to prevent oxygen from spoiling the wine. In the process of filling the barrel to the tippy top, wine will spill over the top of the barrel when the closure is inserted. Drip stains can look messy.

In a valley of beautiful, tidy views and visitors walking through production, many wineries will use wine-based concentrate to paint the central section of the barrel red so it looks striking and reminiscent of wine.

Table Rock Overlook Trail is a pretty little two mile hike just North of Calistoga. You can continue up the trail for the full Table Rock Trail which brings the hike to 4 miles.

Sweeping views, rock labyrinths, and interesting rock formations make it a favorite hike around 10 minutes from Calistoga.

We are feeling thankful for clean air today as our hearts go out to Los Angeles and all those impacted by the horrible wildfires.

Come join us to sip wine in January with gorgeous temperatures in the upper 60's.

I love it when we get a lot of rainfall early in the season. Then we can enjoy beautiful, clear days without the worry of drought. Plus, we get the added bonus of bright gorgeous green hillsides for longer. That said, I also adore our misty, cozy days when there is rain, too, but these sunny days in January feel glorious.
