Our expedition through Society Islands and Tiamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia was magnificent!

Even if National Geographic Orion did not have the luxury finishings, multiple restaurants and extra toys that newer expedition vessels have, this smaller expedition ship had homey feel, outstanding (and very talented!) Filipino crew and excellent guides that more than made up for the lack of bells and whistles.

Arrived at Makatea - a raised coral atoll in the Tuamotu island group of French Polynesia. Makatea has large deposits of phosphate, which was mined on the island for years. When the mining ended, the settlement was nearly completely abandoned. The once busy town is now mostly a ghost town with only a few families left on the island to care for it. The jungle has reclaimed most of the buildings and covered many of the phosphate holes. We carefully trekked across the island avoiding concealed mine holes.

Tahiti is the main island out of the 120 islands of French Polynesia. It is both the gate to the country with Tahiti Fad'a airport and the administrative center of Papeete, the capital and economic lung of the country with its harbor. Accompanied by a fantastic local guide, we left the urbanized coast behind and explored the western coast visiting local fishermen, waterfalls, Teahupoo (one of the best surf spots in the world), and a cosmetic laboratory for the Mono’i oil (the French-Tahitian cosmetic oil consisting of pure coconut oil and the fragrance of tiare, the Tahitian Gardenia).#joyworldtravels #tahiti #wanderlust #beautifuldestinations #traveltheworld

This visit, I took time to roam the streets of Trastevere - a bohemian neighborhood of Rome on the other side of the Tiber River.
