The A.G. Gaston Motel, built by prominent African American businessman and entrepreneur, Arthur George Gaston (1892-1996), provided first-class lodging and dining in Birmingham, Alabama, to African American travelers. The A.G. Gaston Motel served as the headquarters of the campaign to desegregate public accommodations in Birmingham, Alabama. From the motel, leaders made critical decisions that advanced the cause of civil rights locally and shaped events and legislation nationally.

During a recent visit to Memphis, I walked by the WDIA historic landmark. WDIA was the first radio station in the country programmed entirely for the African-American community. The station went on the air on June 7, 1947, and featured African-American radio personalities and brought awareness to a relatively new market of listeners. The station’s
influence and popularity reached 10 percent of
the Black population in the U.S. Music legends such as B.B. King and Rufus Thomas got their start by working at WDIA.
