The Fisk Jubilee Singers were the first artists to bring international acclaim to Tennessee music. Established in 1866, Fisk University offered education to freedpeople. Beginning in 1871, the Fisk Jubilee Singers sacrificed their own educational needs to tour nationally and internationally to provide much needed funds for the school.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers popularized folk spirituals by introducing concert versions of traditional songs. This style of music is an enduring tradition of excellence that continues today. The group has shared their talents with audiences throughout the world, and their work brought recognition to spirituals as an important genre of sacred music.
