European Escapade pt. 14 - Amsterdam and Away

Today was spent walking around the city, getting a few final sightseeing things out of the way. We went to the city square, the war memorial, the Rijksmuseum Garden, and Vondelpark. While there we enjoyed some delicious macarons and Boba Tea along with some lovely music from street performers. After lunch, we went on an hour-long canal cruise through the heart of Amsterdam. Apparently, 12,000 to 15,000 bicycles are dredged out of the canals each year, as our guide put it "The canal is three meters deep, one meter is mud, one meter is water, and the other meter is bikes!"

This was an exceptional, but long trip, suffice it to say I slept well on the plane ride back to the States!

European Escapade pt. 13 - Amsterdam

Today we took a tour bus to see the beautiful flowers at Keukenhof. The gardeners plant around 7 million bulbs each year with over 800 varieties of tulips. After lunch, we went to visit a cheese farm to learn more about the process of making it, the different types of cheeses, and a demonstration of how wooden clogs are made! My favorite stop of the day was the Zaanse Schans Windmills. It's like an open-air museum, except people actually live in the houses and the windmills are still operational. The one you can go inside is used to grind up the chalk and create paint (which you can actually buy in the gift shop!). They also have places to buy cheese, make your own hot chocolate, and pet goats scattered throughout the town.

European Escapade pt.12 - Amsterdam

We spent our first day in the Netherlands surrounded by . . . CHEESE! Just take a short train ride, and you end up in Alkmaar, a cute little town known for its weekly cheese festival. Every Friday from March 29 to September 29, vendors fill the streets, and the cheese masters take their wheels to market. I would definitely recommend attending! While there, we sampled cheeses ranging from pesto to smoked goat cheese and even bought a bag of mystery cheese! In case the festival isn't enough, there is also a cheese museum where you can learn about the rich history and the process of making cheese. We ended a lovely afternoon with some delicious bitterballen!

Paris ~ the City of Light. If you've ever been there or most places in France you know they are no strangers to beauty. The national flower of France follows suit: the iris, a delicate and diverse bloom. For years the iris has served as an emblem of French royalty. There are 250 different varieties of irises the most popular being the Bearded Iris. What's your favorite kind?

European Escapade pt. 11 - Austria

We hopped on a bus and rode over to Hellbrunn Palace. Our tour started in the fabulous gardens and trick fountains, something the Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus had made to compliment his sense of humor. His guests would sit at a stone table in the garden to dine, the bishop had rigged the chairs to spray water out of the bottoms onto the guests! The garden also displayed several Greek statues, miniature theaters (powered by the water), and many fountains, some trick and some not, either way, it was a treat to behold 😏 The tour deposits you in a park right outside the palace, if you walk away you come to the Salzburg zoo. We stayed in the zoo taking in the Marvelous animals for a few hours before returning to tour the castle. The yellow exterior is not its only striking feature. Inside there are many intricate art displays and well-preserved historical items.

European Escapade pt. 10 - Austria

We spent most of the day touring the Hohensalzburg Fortress built by Archbishop Gebhard in 1077. The view from the fortress offers a 360 of the city, it was built as a sign of power and a reminder to the people that he was always watching. There are also several museums located inside displaying things such as weapons, toys, currency, instruments, and even puppets! The remainder of the day was spent touring Motzart's residence. Did you know Motzart took 17 voyages, he traveled for 3270 days, or a third of his life! How many voyages have you undertaken?

We ended with a lovely dinner of Schnitzel at Caffe Ristretto!

European Escapade pt. 9 - Austria

The hills are alive with the sound of music! As soon as our plane descended, I was in awe of the mountainscape. Everywhere you go in the city, the snowy peaks follow you. We started the day in Mirabel Gardens, one of the filming locations for the song "Do-Re-Mi." The gardens were filled with flowers, statues, and fountains, painting a picture-perfect scene. While there, we also visited Mirabel Palace, which will house concerts from time to time. We ended the day with an evening river cruise and some delicious Cordon Blu at Johann's.

Edelweiss!🎶 Currently, wild edelweiss is considered endangered as it grows at altitudes of 6,000 and 11,000 feet in some of the remotest areas of The Alps. Because of this edelweiss is often associated with perseverance and devotion.

European Escapade pt. 8 - Romania

We spent most of our morning in the Communism Museum, learning about what life was like in Romania under the reign of Nicolae Ceaușescu. People were under constant scrutiny, mistreated, and underfed, anything touched by outside cultures was strictly forbidden. The picture of the grocery basket shows the rations given to one family to live off of for an entire week. In the museum, you could see the advancement of their technology, their military training, and even try on Romanian clothes of the period. The picture of the grocery basket shows the rations given to one family to live off of for an entire week.

For lunch we stopped at The Grand Van Gogh Cafe, it was such a cute place! The staircase was painted with a rendition of Starry Night. The walls were covered with replicas of his other famous pieces as well!

Afterward, we went to the residence of Nicolae Ceaușescu. The further into the house you go the more sickened you are, he lived in such luxury while his people suffered. The guide provided a history of his family, estate, and love for peacocks. If you want to learn more I would suggest reading the book I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys!

European Escapade pt. 7 - Romania

We spent the day at The Village Museum, one of Romania's largest open-air museums. Located in Bucharest, the museum was constructed in 1936, after the conclusion of 10 years of field research. While there you can see traditional village housing, windmills, churches, gardens, boat docks, and more. It feels as if you are living and breathing history. Some of the more modern houses had a splash of color on the outside giving them an extra burst of life against the extensive greenery. This is a place I would definitely recommend visiting!

European Escapade pt. 6 - Romania

We started things off in style with a guided tour of the most famous castles in Romania.

Peles Castle ~ considered to be one of the most beautiful castles in the world (it helps that it is also one of the more modern constructions). Each room in the palace has a different theme, derived from the various architects that worked on it. Unfortunately, the day we went, the palace was closed, but the outside view and the grounds were still marvelous.

We stopped for a lunch break in Brasov, a beautiful little town full of flowers and pastel houses. While there, we enjoyed traditional Romanian sarmale at a Dracula-themed restaurant before grabbing a bubble waffle for dessert!

Bran Castle ~ The castle used as inspiration for the book Dracula. The reason this particular castle was chosen was only because the author, Bram Stoker, thought it sounded like his name. The inside of the castle was full of preserved furniture, artifacts, clothing, and more! Outside the castle, the grounds were covered in fun and colorful vendors.

Our next national flower is from Romania. The national flower of Romania was declared to be the peony in 2022. The peony is a symbol of remembrance, similar to the poppy for Veterans Day. Romania celebrates Peony Day every year on May 15th.

Outside of Transylvania, you can find the Steppe Peony Reservation, home to 300 protected plant species, 14 days a year from mid-April to May tourists can come to see a beautiful display of peonies in full bloom, it's worth checking out!

Fun Fact! Peony is the first or last name of over 100,000 Romanians (Flower Power Daily)

European Escapade Pt. 5 - Isle of Skye

We got up early the next morning and began our trek across the Highlands to reach the Isle of Skye. The first thing that I noticed were the sheep; they were EVERYWHERE you looked. In fact, in Scotland, there are more sheep than people! We saw things such as Kilt Rock, Eilean Donan Castle (the most photographed castle in Scotland), The Cullin, and of course some pretty magnificent views! We stopped for lunch and lattes at a cute Highland Cow-themed tea room (I would definitely recommend it!) This was both a fascinating and inspiring day! Topped it off with some fish and chips. 😁

European Escapade pt. 4 - Scotland

From London, we hopped on a train and headed towards Edinburgh. We started off our time in Scotland with a three-day tour with The Hairy Coo. Our first stop was the giant Kelpie monument, which was built in 2013. We had a lunch break at Mhor Breads, which had the most delicious meat pies (the salted caramel lattes are a MUST). My favorite stop was with the hairy coos themselves; I can't get enough of how cute they are!

Along the way, we saw the Harry Potter train along Glenfinnan Viaduct, along with the monument set up across the way! We ended our day with a Nessie Burger from Johnny Foxes in Inverness.

Contrary to popular belief the National Flower of the Netherlands is not actually the Tulip. In 2023 due to popular vote from the people it was changed to be the Daisy!

European Escapade pt. 3 - London

This morning we went to see the changing of the guards and saw about three different patrols. The music and ceremony of it all was an experience I'm glad to have had.

We spent most of the afternoon in The National Gallery revealing at timeless pieces of art. They had several original pieces as well. We also enjoyed some tasty gelato after a wonderful dinner at Wok to Walk!

European Escapade pt. 2 - London

We spent our morning at Tower Bridge and Borough Market. The food was delicious, the atmosphere hectic, and the educational value irreplaceable.

Afterwards we went on a Harry Potter filming tour with Will from Evan Evans. We got to see the entrance to the Ministry of Magic, Diagon Alley, The Leaky Cauldron, and more. He also provided lots of insight into the historical aspects such as Trafalgar Square, Changing of the Horse Guards, London Bridge, and the monument to the Women of World War 2. He showed film clips at the different location that really brought the experience to life. We ended the tour at platform 9 3/4!

We ended the day by going to see Hamilton. The venue was stunning and the acting was even better. Would definitely recommend!

European Escapade pt.1 - London

The minute I stepped out of the underground, I was enthralled. I cannot say enough about the architecture; it speaks of an ancient beauty and grace you don't find elsewhere We spent most of our first day in the British Museum. It was MASSIVE . . . to say the least. While we spent most of our time in the ancient Egypt section, we also explored Rome, Greece, the Middle East, Europe, and more. By that time, the jet lag had kicked in, and I was falling asleep mid bite of-pizza, so we headed back to the hotel.

Our hotel, The Thistle Bloomsbury, was lovely. The breakfasts there were especially good, with anything you could possibly want, from yogurt and chocolate croissants to beans and hashbrowns.

We strolled the city, taking in Big Ben (the name of the bell inside rather than the tower itself), the houses of parliament, and even attended a service at Westminster.

If there's something I love almost as much as travel its flowers! So in May we will be looking at some of the National flowers of countries all across the world.

The first one is Scotland! Scotland's National Flower is the thistle. According to legend the reason is because when invading Norse tried to get in they were trapped in a field of thistles and the thorns deterred them from attack. It has played a vital role in the country ever since.

There is even a royal society called the Order of the Thistle that meets every year at Giles Cathedral. ☀🪻
