Willie Nelson sang for Farm Aid and it didn’t work: this won’t either: yet Destruction of Man is a book: a book by a poet/farmer about farming and a family man and a familiar county–stung body; stung land–as told by a tweaked-to-warble farm machine that ate a human arm, and the chicken ate what’s left, and the hawk ate what’s left, and then the hawk died of old age. This is a book-length poem about small-scale family farming in the midst of the “get-big-or-get-out” mantra and foghorn. The conclusions are clarion clear: rurality has its hectic musics and all we have is love. In the words of Gertrude Stein: “After all anybody is as their land and air is.”

“What if I told you that there was a DJ on the legendary listener-sponsored free form community radio station WFMU who had a polka show from 6-7 pm every Friday evening? You’d think I was pulling your proverbial leg. But it’s true, and it’s really worth tuning in to, even if you don’t think you’re a fan of polka music. Why, just the other day, if someone asked you what kind of music you listen to and you said, “I like all kinds of music—except for modern-day bro country and ’90s rap metal?” Well, polka isn’t either of them. And besides, what’re you doing from 6-7 on Friday anyway? Driving home from work? Making dinner? Just waking up in your non-fancy, fancy pajamas?”

In Maggot Brain #17’s “Atomic Polka” Adam Taub explores the world of community radio with WFMU’s DJ Stashu. Read the entire story and more in the latest issue!

“The title ‘Sound Within Sound’ relates to how I think about some of this music, the music created with other music, as Worlds Within Worlds and Worlds Beyond... Expanded into Possible Realities. The main flute and drum sample is a moment of André 3000 and Carlos Niño when they first picked up their instruments to make sound to get levels (during a 2022 session in Hollywood), as played with my guitar later in my home studio in Tujunga,” shares Nate Mercereau.

“I felt there was more to explore with this motif that they were playing, so I zoomed in on it, and created more with it. I’m grateful to both of them for being supportive of me making more music with our music. In my set up I have a microphone, which is connected to a sampler, which is controlled by the guitar. When the group is playing something I want to play, I can record what’s happening in the room, drop it into the sampler, and play the sound of the group with the guitar. It maps to the fretboard so I can play it at any pitch and speed. With this approach, Anything can become an instrument. All Possible Realities Are Available. ‘Sound Within Sound’ is a version of a Possible Reality. Reality Expanded.

We are thrilled to welcome Melbourne’s The Belair Lip Bombs (Maisie, Mike, Jimmy and Dev) to Third Man Records, and to announce the reissue of their debut album ‘Lush Life’ on limited edition pink and standard black vinyl (out 18th October). We’ve had this record on repeat since its initial release in 2023; The Guardian got it right when they described it as “the kind of punchy, hook-laden rock record that hardly gets made any more, straightforward in sound but borderline unassailable in its construction”. Dive in, and watch this space for more from our first ever Australian band 👀

Pre-order/stream “Lush Life” in the link in bio.

“They hadn’t released any new music in a dozen years, and he had hardly done any recent interviews, when Kevin Shields and I spoke on the phone for several hours-long trans-atlantic talks in anticipation of my book for the 33 1/3 series on his band My Bloody Valentine’s 1992 release Loveless.”

In, ‘Into the Abyss: An archival interview with My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields from 2005,” Maggot Brain editor Mike McGonigal talks to Kevin about the making of Loveless, and all things MBV.

The latest edition of the Vault features a wide variety of full show performances available to cull from in the compiling of “Before The Flood”. It was natural that some songs, no matter how compelling and powerful, would not fit on the original 2xLP release in 1974 so we at Third Man Pressing pressed three charming green LPs, crafting a charming configuration that is the only vinyl release of any of the archived 1974 live recordings. The 74’ tour came at an interesting time for Bob Dylan and The Band. Much had changed since they last toured together in 1966. Since then, The Band had released six LPs, played Woodstock and other famous stages, and recorded a series of historic sessions with Bob Dylan - from The Basement Tapes to Planet Waves. For his part, Bob Dylan had effectively retired from the road altogether following a 1966 motorcycle accident, yet was still “widely regarded as the most influential and significant star in the last 10 years of American popular music,” according to The New York Times.

Tour ‘74 kicked off January 3, 1974, at Chicago Stadium - the largest indoor arena in the world at the time it was built - with a tense and combative rip through ultimate deep-cut “Hero Blues,” an acoustic-gone-electric outtake from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan sessions, that he had scarcely performed before - or since. Additional rarities - like a wildly-reinvented “Ballad Of Hollis Brown,” “Song to Woody” (not performed since 1962) and Planet Waves outtake “Nobody ‘Cept You” - would be well received in the tour’s first nights. “We were booed off of every stage in Europe,” The Band’s Robbie Robertson recalled to Newsweek of their previous run together. “What happened tonight in Chicago is so reassuring for us.”

It’s hard to bring the vibrancy of conversation between two longtime friends to print. In ’Friends And Neighbors, That’s Where It’s At’ Will Oldham and Nathan Salsburg do just that, discussing murder ballads, their new Lungfish tribute, the joys and perils of fatherhood, and how not to write a political song. Though they might not have known it at the time, Bob Dylan and The Band were at the vanguard of a new era. Tour ‘74 would help create the template for the major rock tour, and codify many of its shared experiences - from the sight of audiences holding up lighters en masse (as captured in the iconic cover image for Before The Flood), to the bright flash of the house lights during a show’s signal moment, in this case their performance of “Like A Rolling Stone.” Likewise many songs performed live for the first time on Tour ‘74 - “All Along The Watchtower,” “Forever Young” and the show’s eventual opener-and-closer “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)” - would take on a life of their own.

“The White Stripes played fifteen shows in 1999. Only three of those occurred in any approximate vicinity of others (the late September sojourn opening for Pavement) meaning each one of the shows from ‘99 exists in a vacuum, with new songs flying in and different arrangements making themselves known, no real established running order or pacing/tempo/meter/cadence. All but four of these shows were recorded in some manner, which still feels like a tiny miracle given how unknown and unheralded the band was at this juncture.”

07/16/2024

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, Nashville Mayor Freddie O ‘Connell officially reopened the investigation of the three civil rights and integration era bombings historian Betsy Phillips studies in her book ‘Dynamite Nashville.’ Mayor O’Connell moved to reopen the cases after reading Phillips’ book.

‘Dynamite Nashville: Unmasking the FBI, the K*K, and the Bombers Beyond their Control’ is available today from Third Man physical and digital storefronts and bookstores everywhere.

The book presents new evidence found by Phillips regarding those three unsolved Nashville bombings—Hattie Cotton Elementary School (1957), The Jewish Community Center (1958), and the home of Civil Rights attorney and city councilman, Z. Alexander Looby (1960) and the bombers connections to a racist terrorist network, “The Confederate Underground,” whose members would be involved in at least twenty bombings between 1957 and 1963, including the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Dynamite Nashville is also the story of how communities and heroes like Z. Alexander Looby pushed back. Relying on years of exhaustive research including the FBI and national archives, Phillips’ book is essential to the conversation of effective community and fair law enforcement versus organized, violent, racist action both then and now.
