WWM Staff Picks: Jami Edition

Frequent flyers of WWM will certainly recognize Jami, who has been present at the shop in some capacity for almost a decade. These days, she manages the Sylvan Supply location, so you’ll mostly find her over on the west side, pronouncing every French varietal and term with the proper inflection, and insisting that of course every English-speaking person knows what ‘fête’ means. Here’s what Jami has to say about her picks:

Saumur Brézé - “Contradicts like only great Chenin can. Airy, but intense…like salty whipped cream.”

Chablis - “A playfully rustic wine fit for a starry night and caviar on potato chips.”

‘Senior’ - “A hypnotic portal to Riesling nerd-dom. The overachiever of all its siblings.”

All three of Jami’s picks are available at East, and Lauer Senior is available over at Sylvan.

Kermit Lynch describes the Breton’s as “the real life bon vivants vignerons of lore” and we couldn’t agree more…

If you haven’t the simple, but true pleasure of experiencing wine from this wonderful couple of winemakers we hope you’ll join us in tasting our recent allocation. Catherine and Pierre categorize their wines three ways- Natural Wines (though all of their wines could be considered this way- it is to simply separate the “quaffers” from the more vin sérieux), Classic Wines, and Wines of Terroir (organized and individualized by parcel). The bottles we’ll pour tomorrow are mostly from the first category, so get ready to sip on some easy, delicious bubbles and a chill-worthy red! The final wine will be a special single parcel bottling from the third category- lucky you! Join us today between 3-5pm to taste these with us at either shop.

WWM Staff Picks: Britt Edition

If you’ve been imbibing beverages in Nashville for long, chances are Britt has made you a drink. Britt contains multitudes: cocktail-crafter, entrepreneur, dog-lover, chair-maker and most recently, wine shop vibe-checker. Her wine knowledge has greatly expanded in her time here, as evidenced by her verbosity on the topic. Here’s what Britt has to say about her picks:

Peter Lauer Sekt : “Two words: Lauer bubbz.”

Guido Marsella Fiano: “Two words: joy bomb.”

Serol Turbullent: “Two words: purple party.”

Foradori Teroldego: “Two words: sexy silky.”

Zubrówka Vodka: “Two words: saturday night.”

High among the Dolomites in Trentino-Alto Adige, tends to their 30 hectare, century-old biodynamic estate planted primarily to Teroldego, an internationally-obscure but locally-revered indigenous red grape. Upon tasting these wines, you may immediately wonder - why have I never heard of this grape before?! Teroldego has the versatility of something with much more popularity potential - with some expressions worthy of the cellar and others the perfect vision of snappy glou glou to pop in the fridge for a bit and enjoy on a picnic. Three expressions of Teroldego from Foradori are now available in both shops, alongside one bottling of Manzoni Bianco (a cross of Pinot Blanc and Riesling!!).

In collaboration with Bearded Iris Brewing and the maverick importer Holmes Cay*, we are beyond excited to introduce you to our very own single cask rum sourced from the Jamaican distilling legend Hampden. Beyond wine, it is rare for a beverage to evoke terroir quite like rum can. This spirit is so diverse and complex in fact, there is an entire culture committed to dissecting and solving its many mysteries. We chose this cask in particular because it is a golden gateway to falling in love with rum at first sip- even if you haven’t discovered its treasures yet!

*Holmes Cay focuses on bringing special, limited-edition casks from respected and up-and-coming distilleries that are difficult or impossible to find in the United States with its Single Cask rum line.

About Hampden: Hampden’s estate is a time capsule…it is truly an old guard distillery- though it did change hands at the turn of the 21st century when the Jamaican government bought it from original family (whose ancestral gravesite remains) and sold it to the current owners who revived it: the Hussey’s. It is a bastion of old school technique- even using “muck” (aka dunder) to produce their some of their high ester-count rum marques. Don’t know what any of that means? Don’t worry- there is plenty of time to become a rum nerd. You should probably start with…

Our OWH Cask: Friendly but deep, our OWH mark single cask from Hampden will delight the senses and is a perfect bottle for collectors and newbies alike. Tasting notes: apricot, wet to***co leaf, underripe tropical fruit, petrol, palo santo, green coffee bean, marzipan, balanced funk.

Today we are tasting a smattering of delicious wine, mostly German, that has absolutely knocked our socks off. Bottles featured will be powerhouse pink bubbles from Cotes du Toul, shimmery Riesling and soft rosé of Pinot from the Nahe, and a surprising Pinot Blanc from Pfalz. Journey with us starting at the birth of the Mosel, across the border into some stunning parts of Germany. We’ll talk about what makes each of these sometimes overlooked bottles so incredibly special… spoiler alert: it’s terroir of course. Taste these between 3-5pm at both shops.

WWM Staff Picks: Violet Edition

If you shop at WWM East, you’ve probably been directed to Violet to have your questions about beer, aromatic whites and clear spirits answered with gusto. When she’s not drinking Gewurtztraminer and listening to Oasis, you can find her drinking a variety of wine. Here’s what she has to say about her 3 favorite bottles currently in the shop:

Morgon: “This was the first bottle of wine that I ever fell in love with. So much Beaujolais is light and bouncy but this expression of Morgon is like a femme fatale in a noir film. Silky, sexy, and dangerous.”
wein Blauschiefer Riesling: “This is my favorite grape of all time and this expression of it that stands above all others for me, much like the hilltop vineyard it comes from. Stein is unique for its blue slate soil which in German translates to Blauschiefer. Definitely pair with spicy food.”

Philippe Chavy Bourgogne Blanc: “I don’t need to convince any one of the merits of Burgundy but unfortunately that prestige can also come with a high barrier of entry. This expression of Chardonnay from Philippe Chavy delivers all of the juicy orchard fruit and soft minerality that you want for less than $50. Undoubtably my favorite wine I’ve had this year.”

All three of Violet’s picks are available at both shops!

WWM Staff Picks: Ashton Edition

We caught up with Ashton over in the Riesling corner. Here’s what he had to say of his three favorite wines in the shop right now.

Etna Bianco: “I was a red drinker who couldn’t learn to like white wine until I started trying Italian and Spanish varieties. Something about Etna’s mineral qualities, acidity, and citrus notes hit my palate just right.”

Plan de Dieu: “When I want a red wine, I want fat, juicy, dark berry fruit and this one brings it, with enough structure that I know it can handle a hearty meal (though i just want it by itself after dinner hanging out by the fire).”

Passatella: “My first loves in wine were Italian reds, but I tend to drink white more often now. While this one is technically rosé, it’s so pink that it’s almost red, giving it the levity of white wine but the substantial mouthfeel of a lighter red.”

All three of Ashton’s picks are available at the East shop!

As we enter the muggy Tennessee summer, everyone seems to be talking about traveling. Whether you are packing or planning… the hot weather in Nashville has got us wishing for one thing- a cool ocean breeze. For today’s tasting, we’ll bring the beach to you! We have a classic rosé from beautiful Provence, a Greek white that rivals the cool minerality of Chablis, and a chillable red from Croatia whose name literally means “slow down, no worries”. Let’s unwind, drink some good wine and talk about our dreamy vacation plans together! 3-5PM, both shops.

If you’re a Field Trip member, you got a little heads up that this favorite from May’s Santa Barbara wine club bag was returning to the shop, this time for the shelf. For those of you who are not (or not yet!) Field Trip members, this is your first shot at Gamay - only their 5th vintage of this bright, juicy, Beaujolais-inspired gem. Available in very limited quantities at both shops.

ALIGOTÉ - oft referred to as “the other Burgundian white”, this lesser-planted, lesser-known varietal may lack the household appeal of its much more famous counterpart (Chardonnay), but it it nonetheless capable of making compelling wine. A range of pithy citrus, juicy orchard fruit, hazelnut, herbaceous aromatics, and distinctive flintiness can define a glass of Burgundy’s sometimes-neglected middle child. Given its relative rarity, it’s not common to find so many expressions from a variety of producers available in the shop at once: from the legendary , whose estate is in the appellation from which Aligoté is considered best, to Santa Maria Valley darlings - we’ve got options if you’re interested in exploring this overlooked gem.

We are loving these new releases from Vom Boden and can’t wait to show you what all the hype is about. From 3-5PM at both shops.

Chenin from Chinon! Not much white wine comes out of Chinon, which is mostly known for stellar Cabernet Franc. In fact, only 2% of the appellation is planted to Chenin Blanc, with only a few estates having access to the fruit. is one such lucky estate, and quite the responsible steward of these rare vines! This lovely regional curio is now available at both shops.
