On this day in 1946, French designer Louis Réard unveiled his "bikini" swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Its debut coincided with the first summer of liberation following the end of World War II in Europe, when designers began creating leisurewear to fit the mood of the times. The swimsuit became a staple on European beaches in the 1950s.

"He named his design ‘bikini’ after Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing on the atomic bomb was happening. His reasoning? Just like Hiem, Réard hoped that his invention would be as explosive as the testing was.
It certainly was and initially, no models would wear his design – it was the first garment to ever expose the belly button and this was considered seriously scandalous."
