ROAD CLOSURE - WASHINGTON STREET

NATCHITOCHES – The City of Natchitoches would like to advise the public that Washington Street has been closed to through traffic, just north of the intersection of Lafayette Street, for pavement repairs.
The duration of the closure is unknown at this time.
Through traffic is being detoured via Texas Street and Lafayette Street.

“Our troops now occupy Natchitoches, and we hope to be in Shreveport by the 10th of April. I do not fear concentration of the enemy at that point. My fear is that they may not be willing to meet us there; if not… I shall pursue the enemy into the interior of Texas…” - Nathaniel Banks to commanding general Ulysses S. Grant

The Red River Campaign brought both Confederate and Union troops through the Cane River region in the spring of 1864. Damage was limited within the town of Natchitoches itself, but a tide of looting, destruction, and devastation rolled towards both Alexandria and Shreveport at the hands of both armies.

This sketch was featured in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, on May 7, 1864, with updates of the war in Louisiana.
