First, VI Women on the Water, Learn About Sailing Things, (L.A.ST) event was a success. Fun night, great food, good wine, laughter and learning. Covered cleat hitch, clove hitch and bowline which are all challenging to tie after a few glasses of wine. Great job ladies! Can't wait for the next get together in July.

Love to see our guests smile!

Sailing and snorkeling around the park, you never know what you will find. We love our nurse sharks, the chocolate lab of the sea.

The nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) is the most common shark found in the waters of Virgin Islands National Park.

During the day, these sharks are frequently found lounging about on the sandy bottom under ledges in our reefs. Feeding on small fish, mollusks, and crustaceans, nurse sharks pose very little threat to humans as long as we give them a wide berth.

Nurse sharks, along with all the other creatures that inhabit coral reefs, should be left to themselves. Exploring a coral reef is an incredible experience, but we must always remember to respect the plants and animals that comprise the delicate reef ecosystem. This means that we should refrain from coming in contact with any part of the reef.

Also, please remember to use mineral-based reef-safe sunscreen here in the Virgin Islands. Climate change is rapidly degrading coral reefs, and chemicals contained in traditional sunscreens prevent coral polyps from being able to reproduce. Please help us to fulfill our mission of preserving and protecting these challenged resources by keeping these chemicals out of the ocean.

Great job! Swim Mahogany swim, but come back soon to visit.

Congratulations to STAR and our authorized partners at St. Croix Animal Welfare Center and Coral World for successfully rehabilitating this loggerhead sea turtle, a rare visitor to our waters!

All Sea Turtle Assistance and Rescue activities are managed by Level 1 responders permitted by the Division of Fish & Wildlife under DFW19079U. Each rescue and recovery is done through an extensively trained group of individuals throughout the USVI. This turtle was rescued because divers called the STAR hotline at (340) 690-0474.

Happening now in St John!

Two hawksbill sea turtle nests have recently hatched! An excavation by the Turtle Protection team of one of the nests was conducted and yielded a 94% hatching success! 🐢🐢🐢

What is an excavation? Conducted by permitted and trained professionals, excavations are a great way to collect invaluable data about the nest such as hatching success (how many turtles successfully hatched) and emergence rate (how many turtles successfully made it to the surface). Conducted 3-5 days after a nest has hatched, the Turtle Team dig down into the egg chamber and remove the contents of the nest (egg fragments, live/dead hatchlings, and undeveloped eggs) which they open, assess, and categorize and record the findings. Hatch and emergence success are calculated and tissue samples from deceased full term hatchlings are taken for on-going genetic research! Any live hatchlings "stragglers" that are found in the egg chamber are released usually at sunset.

The last pulse of leatherback hatchlings from nests this year is happening now. This tinglarito (baby leatherback 😍) was leaving a south shore beach Wednesday morning, and was found by our turtle patrollers.
