Johnny Carmack drove stage for eleven years, the first six years being the run from Boulder to Caribou. In summer, he made the trip from the head of Boulder Canyon to Caribou in five hours, providing all went well. It took three hours to get to Nederland and two more to Caribou. On the way down he could make it the 18 miles from Nederland to Boulder in one and three-quarter hours.

“In winter, it seemed that all the winds and all the snows were at the devils command to block the roads.” At Nederland, he changed the coach for a bobsled to which were hitched fresh horses. Then off to Caribou in the teeth of blizzards or bitter cold. He and another man were on the run, one up and one down each day. He wore long heavy coats and long wool scarfs which he wrapped around neck and head leaving only one eye exposed. When the bitter weather would cause lashes to freeze, he would uncover the other eye.

For another five years, Johnny drove the Concord stage between Nederland to Boulder some of which was during the building of Barker Dam (1908–10). It was a special coach, beautifully finished, one of the big coaches, typically pulled by six horses. At one time 31 men rode on it to Nederland.
