Remembering WW II – Next Move to Ultimately Defeat Imperial Japan

Having succeeded in seizing and securing from Imperial Japan the islands of the SW Pacific and capturing the Mariana Islands in the Central Pacific, US President Franklin Roosevelt decided to meet with his Pacific commanders to determine what’s next. On July 26, 1944, President Roosevelt flew to Honolulu, Hawaii to meet with US General Douglas MacArthur and US Admiral Chester Nimitz to discuss the next move. Ultimately it was decided to invade and reoccupy the Philippine Islands. This decision would enable General MacArthur to make good on his promise “I shall return!”

Remembering WW II – Imperial Japan’s Premier Tojo Removed

Imperial Japan’s Premier Hideki Tojo was removed from office by Japans’s High Command Council on July 18, 1944. His sudden fall from power was primarily the result ot Japan’s military setbacks in the Pacific such as the seizure of the Island of Saipan on July 9 by US forces. Lt-General Kuniaki Koiso, a successful China theater war leader, was charged by the High Command to form a new war cabinet.

Remembering WW II – The Crucial Battle Across the Hedgerows

Having successfully landed across the Normandy Beaches on June 6, 1944, the next crucial battle for the Allies was to cross the surrounding hedgerow terrain to seize the road and rail junction town of St. Lo on the Cotentin Peninsula. Underestimated by the Allied planners was the nature of the hedgerow terrain on the peninsula. Hedges estimated to be only 2 to 3 feet high were 6 to 16 feet high enabling the Germans to use the hedgerows as defensive barriers and counter the drive to seize St. Lo for over 40 days. St. Lo was captured on July 18.

Remembering WW II – Critical Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 1944

The Battle of the Philippine Sea was fought in a giant clash of Japanese Imperial Navy and US Navy aircraft, surface ships and submarines June 19 – 20, 1944. The Japanese Navy commanders sought via this naval engagement to totally destroy the US Navy Fleet operating around the Mariana Islands in the Central Pacific. In two days of engagement however, the Japanese fleet lost all their carriers and 416 planes. After appraising the battle losses, a stunned Japanese High Command thereafter abandoned hope that Japan could possibly win the war in the Pacific.

Remembering WW II – Operation Fortitude Deception Plan

Operation Fortitude, an effort by Supreme Headquarters Allied Expedtionary Force (SHAEF) in the Spring of 1944 to deceive the German military into thinking that an invasion of occupied Europe was going to be launched in July 1944 over the beaches of NW France, north of the Seine River, proved to be a major success. The German Military High Command stationed most of their coastal defense forces north of the Seine River in the vicinity of Pas de Calais.
