For whatever reason, the Instagram gods have brought us some new followers + friends this week…so a fresh introduction feels appropriate!

We’re Josh + Mollie Boersma, owners + operators of , , and (along with some family!)…we started this Instagram account about a year ago + kept it a secret, so we could document our ‘journey’ to becoming the newest owners of the historic 1923 school, The Milford Township Consolidated School in Nevada, Iowa.

Together with our kiddos, Maverick (9) and Cooper (almost 5!) we live/work/play here + host events in our ballroom/conference room spaces and host overnight guests (short + long term!) in our three second floor suites (we live upstairs on the third!) …we love ‘old stuff’ and hosting people in our home…this old schoolhouse allows us to enjoy both of those things, on a scale we’d never imagined in our wildest dreams.

We love escaping to Galena whenever we get a chance; roaming the surrounding gravel roads on our UTV; putting up way too many trees at Christmas (17?!); and cuddling up to watch family movies in a school classroom turned theater room. Our boys stay busy with pet chores (we have two dogs, three cats, four chickens, and two ducks here!) and Lego’s…Josh stays busy as Milford’s newest maintenance man + running BLC, now in its 27th season…and I stay busy washing + making ten beds in this schoolhouse + cleaning its immense 27,000 square feet.

We aren’t sure what this crazy schoolhouse journey will bring, but we’re thankful you’re along for the ride!

The secret’s out…an official *JB Knacker at the Milford* collab is in the works for the end of February!

Brenda is moving in + sticking around for a few months while we trial monthly pop-ups in a different space…THE BASEMENT!

We’ve been at this hosting gig for nearly four years, and in that time, we’ve had so many lovely guests…but I think my favorite group to host was from a request that came through in the middle of the night from a family traveling from another state to say final goodbyes to a loved one. They hopped in the car without a plan, just hoped they’d find a place to stay when they arrived…and they found us !

We were so happy our home was a comfortable landing place during a hard time…And thus, an even deeper love for hospitality was born. In the earliest stages of brainstorming about Milford, suites were always a main priority…we can’t help it, we’ve always loved a full house!

Absolutely adored setting up our ballroom for Cooper’s Preschool Christmas program. 200 friends in our ballroom on a Tuesday night to watch 20 preschoolers share the Christmas story with their costumes and songs…what a dream!

Last weekends’ party was so wild, I hardly got any photos…but I managed to snap this one before we fell into bed.

This plant wall on the third floor is so unique and fun (there’s even a hose and a drain!), but it wasn’t really ‘speaking to me’ with CHRISTMAS out. So we cut + mounted four evergreens in a variety of sizes and kinds + strung some lights…and now it’s our favorite corner of the house!

Family, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, and everyone in between…

THANK YOU for coming out to our little (read: not-so-little) Christmas event on Sunday! We welcomed around 300 people through Milford’s doors and had the sweetest festive night. From the shopping to the touring to the socializing, it seemed to us like a fun time was had by all!

Thanks for your patience as we work out the kinks with events this LARGE. This was an incredible test run + we couldn’t have done it without our parents and siblings and friends helping us hold down the fort while we managed a crowd this size! Next year…we’ll open the basement + make sure we have more FOOD!

Stay tuned for more events and possible pop-ups over the winter! Murder Mystery Dinner in the ballroom; Galentine’s spa night in a suite; and of course our annual Easter Egg Hunt are all on the horizon for Milford in 2025.
