We love a Winter porch refresh…and this one happened just in time for today’s snowstorm!

Prep is well underway for our first at the Milford event next weekend…February 21 & 22, 9am-2pm both days (more monthly dates will be announced soon!). We can’t wait to see you in the old basement lunchroom!

*Please note: Our residence (3rd floor) will NOT be open for touring during these monthly pop-up shows, please do not try going upstairs + head to the basement upon entrance to the school.*

Feeling especially thankful today to be able to wake up to a happy + healthy family and spend the day doing what we enjoy with the people we love the most.

We don’t always get it right, we are not a Picture-Perfect-Always-Happy-Family (we’re much too loud + opinionated for that) but when tragedy devastates friends around us…how quickly it puts everything in perspective.

Sometimes hospitality looks like hosting guests in our home and operating an Airbnb…sometimes it looks like panic delivering chips + queso when you don’t know what else to do. Today we ended up doing both.

Cuddling these three a little longer at bedtime tonight.

With 27,000 square feet to keep clean + tidy, sometimes I feel a little like a princess trapped in a castle (castle for obvious reasons, ‘trapped princess’ because so much CLEANING)…it’s hard to get outside for yard work and animal chores + easier to outsource those to the kids and but I’ll tell you something…nothing makes that ‘princess in a castle’ feeling go away faster than an afternoon spent cleaning out the chicken coop on a winter day. And I loved every minute of it!

Adjusting to life at the school has been easy on 3/4 family members (🙋🏽‍♀️)…there are still so many things about life on our old acreage that we miss dearly! But an afternoon of animal chores was an easy fix for those feelings.

For whatever reason, the Instagram gods have brought us some new followers + friends this week…so a fresh introduction feels appropriate!

We’re Josh + Mollie Boersma, owners + operators of , , and (along with some family!)…we started this Instagram account about a year ago + kept it a secret, so we could document our ‘journey’ to becoming the newest owners of the historic 1923 school, The Milford Township Consolidated School in Nevada, Iowa.

Together with our kiddos, Maverick (9) and Cooper (almost 5!) we live/work/play here + host events in our ballroom/conference room spaces and host overnight guests (short + long term!) in our three second floor suites (we live upstairs on the third!) …we love ‘old stuff’ and hosting people in our home…this old schoolhouse allows us to enjoy both of those things, on a scale we’d never imagined in our wildest dreams.

We love escaping to Galena whenever we get a chance; roaming the surrounding gravel roads on our UTV; putting up way too many trees at Christmas (17?!); and cuddling up to watch family movies in a school classroom turned theater room. Our boys stay busy with pet chores (we have two dogs, three cats, four chickens, and two ducks here!) and Lego’s…Josh stays busy as Milford’s newest maintenance man + running BLC, now in its 27th season…and I stay busy washing + making ten beds in this schoolhouse + cleaning its immense 27,000 square feet.

We aren’t sure what this crazy schoolhouse journey will bring, but we’re thankful you’re along for the ride!

Brenda is moving in + sticking around for a few months while we trial monthly pop-ups in a different space…THE BASEMENT!

We’ve been at this hosting gig for nearly four years, and in that time, we’ve had so many lovely guests…but I think my favorite group to host was from a request that came through in the middle of the night from a family traveling from another state to say final goodbyes to a loved one. They hopped in the car without a plan, just hoped they’d find a place to stay when they arrived…and they found us !

We were so happy our home was a comfortable landing place during a hard time…And thus, an even deeper love for hospitality was born. In the earliest stages of brainstorming about Milford, suites were always a main priority…we can’t help it, we’ve always loved a full house!

Time to clean the mess in the schoolhouse ballroom! For the past week our kids, cousins, and friends have romped around in here, building castles and mazes with our moving box collection…today it was finally time for a clean-up. So excited for all the possibilities in this space!

First load of groceries, coming up three flights on the schoolhouse elevator!
