The idea of creating Mass Escape began with a group of friends trying an escape room at a bachelor party, but their story really began in 1989 when the group of owners became friends. Although self-taught, as fans of strategy games they had a strong foundation to get them started. They were also able to enlist the guidance of other local escape room owners.

Josh Bruins, Daniel Turpin, Jacob Martin, and Anna Whalley just launched their new room this week. Try your hand at The Pentex Conspiracy!

With over 21 years of experience as a dollhouse collector, Nathaniel Ellis is well-known for his love and respect for the timeless art form.

“I didn’t get a dollhouse growing up. I remember being too scared and ashamed as a boy that I would be teased if I got one, so I never really put it on my Christmas list...It is incredibly validating to sell them for me now, knowing how bad I wanted one when growing up.” - Nathaniel Ellis

You can find Flip This Dollhouse, the world’s largest dollhouse store, on the second floor of the Kilburn Mill!

A striker stands poised to hurl his harpoon at a swordfish below. Harpooning a swordfish is no easy task; strikers had to be very accurate with their throw. Once harpooned, the harpoon point (called a dart) is dislodged into the fish. The dart is attached to a long rope, and as the swordfish swims away, the line is pulled off the vessel, dragging along several buoys to mark the path of the swordfish. Fishermen then follow along in a dory (small row boat) to retrieve the fish and bring it back to the vessel.

You can learn more about the history of commercial swordfishing by exploring the Fishing Heritage Center’s upcoming exhibit, Stand Clear the Line: Swordfishing on the Southcoast, opening April 2024.

Chef Gui Aguilar began cooking at the age of ten. What began as a necessity quickly became his passion. Now, passion and innovation are evident in every bite of his thoughtfully curated menu at 222 Union Restaurant and Bar at the New Bedford Harbor Hotel. His dishes put a fresh spin on local cultural flavors with what he calls an “eclectic continental focus.”

The New Bedford Harbor Hotel will host the after-parties and final award ceremony for the first annual New Bedford Film Festival next week 4/18-4/21.

"Before the Day of Balloon Tires" - Edward T. Pierce (1855-1937), with a young male passenger, driving a sleigh drawn by his horse, Edgemont, over a snowy residential street in New Bedford in 1912. The Pierce family was at the center of New Bedford's textile boom with Edward holding key roles in various mills around the city, including treasurer and director of Wamsutta Mills. With his father and brothers, Andrew Jr. and Albert, they formed the Pierce Manufacturing Corporation (1892) and Pierce Brothers Limited (1909).

The Pour Farm Tavern has been a staple of downtown New Bedford since 2008. A spot where locals love to grab a craft beer and listen to Pearly Baker on the patio on a summer night.

Jen & Brad Cardoza spent many years as loving patrons and are now celebrating their two years as owners of The Pour Farm Tavern this Sunday! While continuing to honor what locals originally loved about the tavern, they are incorporating new menu items, new sounds, and an endless variety of craft brews.

The crew of the F/V Comber aloft in the top mast, some 53 feet above the deck, scanning the waves for swordfish. On a swordfishing trip, crew members climbed up in the rigging and acted as “spotters,” spending hours looking for swordfish. Once the swordfish was spotted, they would call down to the harpooner, commonly referred to as the “striker,” who would ready himself at the bow, preparing to strike the swordfish with his harpoon.

You can learn more about the history of commercial swordfishing by exploring the Fishing Heritage Center’s upcoming exhibit, Stand Clear the Line: Swordfishing on the Southcoast, opening April 11, 2024.

"Fire Station No. 1." Photograph. [ca. 1860-1955] - In 1859, an order was passed by the city government for the purchase of the first steam fire engine, Onward, No. 1 (built by Amoskeag Mfg.
