Mural Apprenticeship Program
Rising temperatures in cities is a public health and communities of color are most at risk from the impacts of climate change. Black and Latine communities are more likely than the overall population in the same area to be exposed to extreme heat. These communities need to be at the forefront of climate discourse to bring greater awareness of these disparities and help bring forth meaningful solutions.
Public Art as Urban Climate Solutions, a Yale climate action initiative, is pleased to announce the launch of a mural program to increase climate engagement with local Black and Latine communities in New Haven, CT. Yale’s Schools of Art, Environment, & Architecture have partnered with the City of New Haven’s Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism to create the city’s first Mural Apprenticeship Program to train local artists in the art of mural-making. The Goffe Street Armory, a historic landmark on the Connecticut Freedom Trail, will be the site of this installation that will use innovative cooling paint technology to reflect UV radiation and lower surface temperatures. This mural on this anchor of local Black and Latine activism will promote awareness of the disproportionate climate impacts facing these communities while also imbuing a message of hope for the future.
We’re incredibly excited to announce our team of artists and designers who will be installing the mural early Fall 2024. Follow us to stay up-to-date with the next phase of this historic mural.

City of New Haven’s first Poet laureate!
History has been made! On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Mayor Justin Elicker inducted Sharmont “Influence” Little as the first-ever poet laureate of New Haven. Little received a proclamation from the Mayor and a standing ovation from the City of New Haven! Meaningful, heartfelt words were shared in support of Little’s induction by Kelly Wuzzado, Jason Dorsey, IfeMichelle Gardin, our department’s own, Myles Riley, Jamal Jimerson, and Mayor Elicker himself. But, the event couldn’t end there. Sharmont Little, being the communal pillar he is, shared the night with more poets during “Elm City Flow” an open mic series dedicated to the citizens and neighbors of New Haven in partnership with the Department of Arts, Culture, and Tourism. Jazzy’s Cabaret also contributed to this historic night with their excellent food and catering service! This is celebrating arts, celebrating culture, equitable civic engagement, and spiritual uplift at its finest! Congratulations again to our first-ever Poet Laureate, Sharmont “Influence” Little. @influence_a_life || 🎥: @quisdotcom
