Just a few years ago, climbing access at West Rock was in jeopardy over concerns about climbing impacts on raptor nesting, rare cactus species, protected mountain laurel, and over some recent bolting activity.

Fortunately, a small group of folks at Ragged Mountain Foundation has been able to foster new relationships with State and local officials - and West Rock remains OPEN for .

In fact, New Haven parks dept are excited to help promote climbing access as we continue to responsibly manage climbing impacts.

Continued access depends on climbers' stewardship and practices at the cliff, which we share with protected species and other user groups.

That means:

+ Honoring falcon closures
+ Avoiding any present raptors or nests
+ Never damaging cactus 🌵
+ Never damaging mtn laurel
+ Not bolting without coordination
+ Not trundling rocks without coordination
+ Not building new trails without coordination

Preservation of access takes hard work and good behavior from our community. I’m proud to say we’re in a much better space than we were a short time ago. Let’s keep it up!
