We should all learn about and take pride in America’s Black History. The 29th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers were the state’s first all Black and also Native American regiment to fight in the Civil War. Mustered in New Haven in 1863 they were victorious in many battles, seen here lined up in Beaufort SC, where they helped shape this young country so we can all live here in freedom today.

Pizza is such a fun way to explore the world and share stories ! That’s what I’ve been doing with our friends up the coast at to help identify Beantown and Mass pizza history, styles, trends & more.

This article begins the exploration into Greek New England style pizza which can now be found all over the East Coast of the US. With origins in 1952 in New London, CT, Greek restaurateurs began specializing in a pan baked pizza that onto only started a trend, it is now one of the most common types of pizza prevalent in New England!

APIZZA pronounced “ah-beetz” is the original Napolitano way of saying LA PIZZA. Now mostly related to the New Haven area of Connecticut and found at New Haven style pizzerias around the world, it’s remained a tradition here like a time capsule, backed by an area that has the most people of Italian descent per capita in the US. People are understandably confused as to why there’a an “A” in front of “pizza” and why it sounds different. I’m here to educate you, and yes Apizza was the word used for pizza in every Southern Italian enclave in the US when the immigrants came over 100 years ago and how it was and is still used in Napoli & Campania, where pizza came from.

Here’s a 1943 article from The Evening Star out of Washington D.C. showing that Coney Island Brooklyn used the word apizza!

Breaking News: An executive order has been issued by Chief Justice of the Pizza Colin M. Caplan in the Pizza Capital New Haven renaming what had been originally called the Gulf of Mexico and then ordered changed to the Gulf of America, to now be called the Gulf of Apizza. This is adding fuel to the fire in a heated debate about naming geographical locations and which city has the best pizza.

Helping to broker this peace offering to neighbors in the Gulf is a haven of thin crust pizza and craft beer, Piece Pizzeria of Chicago, a city mostly known for its soggy bog-like pile called deep dish pizza. Owner Billy Jacobs believes that this name change reflects real American values which happen to be shared by all of its global neighbors.

The renaming to the Gulf of Apizza is “more fitting in every way. The other name left a bad taste in the mouth,” contends Caplan who is fired up about what’s on the table. “The Gulf has all the right ingredients to make this change palatable: water, salt and plenty of oil reserves. Heck, the word Tomato comes from Mexico.”

As officials begin to digest the new name for the Gulf, it’s beginning to stir the pot to further talks on how neighboring countries can share more while dieting their appetites for dominance and control of limited resources. What it all boils down to is our ability to break bread together because we only have each other when the fires goes out.
