My pizza obsession was fed today!

During a meeting with at the admissions office where they have every yearbook going back to 1938, I found a historic record of a small spot in Hamden that also served pizza called the Whitney Luncheonette. It was started in 1947 by Joseph J. DeFrancesco whose parents came to New Haven from Cervino, Caserta, outside of Napoli. I had previously only seen records of this place serving apizza in the late 1950s so the discovery of this 1949 ad helps to tell a larger story about pizza making in the Whitneyville neighborhood!

Class is in session! Pizza is from Naples. In Naples they spoke Napoletana. There LA PIZZA was A’PIZZA. Italy was unified in 1861 & the northern Italian language was pushed onto all of Italy removing local languages & dialects from public speech. During this time many southern Italians left for a better way of life arriving as immigrants in America. They brought their families, their food, their saints, their mannerisms & their language. By 1910, New Haven Connecticut became the largest Italian enclave per capita outside of Italy with 1/3 the population hailing from Italy, mostly outside of Naples.
