It is a New Orleans cultural and Catholic cusom to visit the dead on All saints and all souls- Nov 1 and 2.. You help pray the spirits out of purgatory , those that died in the faith, especially those that have passed in the last year.. Historically you visit the tomb, clean them, decorate them, feed and even picnic with the dead. The priests come to bless the tombs and you would "make the 4 corners'"which I still do, just like Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau did. So my home town honors our Latin Catholic cultural traditions by upholding these Holy days and I do the same. This year there is a new addition to the family so we did our presentations to the spirits of New Orleans (the architects) , our God family and our ancestors. it is important to honor the ones who built your town you live in spiritually and physically alongside your friends and family on the other side- whom I i call the architects! So just like the Catholic day of the dead in Mexico New Orleans has her days Toussaint ( all saints) and All souls day traditions which blended into New Orleans Voodoo too,. WE visit the dead, picnic in graveyards, pray, play music and even dance with the dead ! New Orleans is a Gumbo and. a fate community which was always mixing and stirring the roux releasing a fusion of flavors and magics! My family has been here 300 years and i honor all our forebears, all colors, races and ethnicities, for as spirits see us for our hearts I too honor and pray with all of theirs! Amen! Ase!
