New Orleans Steamboat Company lost a great man on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 75. Gordon Stevens graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School and Loyola University and served in the U.S. Naval Air Force Reserve. Afterward Gordon dedicated his professional career to the New Orleans Steamboat Company and Gray Line Tours. A natural leader, Gordon Stevens rose from the company’s Controller to General Manager and eventually President/CEO in 1995. In 1990 he became a founder and part-owner of Café Beignet and Ted’s Frostop. We are forever grateful for everything he did at the helm of our company and for his countless contributions to New Orleans.

Gordon Stevens grew up on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, catching snakes and snapping turtles behind the levee and watching cargo ships pass by. The river got into his blood, as he says, but he said he never imagined he would one day be the steward of a river icon, the last authentic steamboat on the Mississippi, and an international symbol of New Orleans. This sense of stewardship was never stronger than during the years post-Katrina, as he successfully navigated The New Orleans Steamboat Company through one of the region’s most difficult chapters and the company’s gravest days.

As a father of seven and “Pops” to 15 grandchildren, Gordon has always felt a great responsibility to preserve the livelihood of his employees. He said his favorite part of his job was seeing many of his staff growing up from young men and women, starting and growing their families, and progressing in their professions. Today out of 149 full time employees, nearly one third have been with the company for 10+ years and 23 have been on board more than 20 years. In 2024 Gray Line New Orleans, the city’s oldest and largest sightseeing company turned 100 and in 2025 the Steamboat NATCHEZ celebrates its 50th anniversary—both stronger than ever.

Mr. Stevens has served on the Board of numerous professional organizations, such as the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau and French Quarter Festivals. He was also a shareholder, patron and fan of NOLA Gold Rugby. One of the highlights of his professional career was being elected by his peers as President of the National Passenger Vessel Association in 1992 after 13 years of Board service.

Guided by the strong Catholic traditions in which he was raised, Mr. Stevens has held many leadership roles in organizations that make the community a better place. He was President of Legatus, served on the Board of the Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Regents of Our Lady of Holy Cross College. During his 12 year tenure on the Board of the Catholic Community Foundation of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, he saw the Foundation’s assets doubled to approximately $94 million. This foundation is the planned giving entity for the Archdiocese and distributes millions annually to a variety of worthy ministries. In 2015 he served as the Foundation’s President and in 2018 he was recognized as the Saint Pope John Paul II Award recipient.

The steadfast leadership of Mr. Stevens will never be forgotten.
