Photo by Trevor Mark Yes, New Orleans is a drinking city with a thriving bar scene, but its allure goes way beyond the wild partying on Bourbon Street. It’s still easy to take in all the city has to offer — while completely foregoing the drinking aspect. Plus, the vibrant culture and over 300 ye...

The Official 2024 French Quarter Festival poster, created by Monica Rose Kelly , is an original watercolor painting with ornate hand-lettering that is influenced by the decorative styles found throughout the French Quarter. “I chose to honor women musicians, specifically the musical mothers of New Orleans, who not only work tirelessly to raise the children of our city but moonlight as culture-bearers,” says Kelly, “Women have not been often represented in New Orleans festival posters or murals, which is why I chose to depict them in many of my recent works. In addition to renderings of the ironwork found throughout the Quarter’s many balconies, I have incorporated a design from the top spire of the St. Louis Cathedral’s steeple in the background. This alternative representation of the beloved landmark is a nod to the African blacksmiths that designed many of the architectural details in the French Quarter. The tropical botanicals found in the Quarter’s hidden courtyards are painted behind the ironwork as well. The bottom of the composition shows a map of the French Quarter adorned with sprawling jasmine vines that blossom in the exact location of each FQF stage.”

The 2024 poster will be available in two limited editions: Numbered offset prints and numbered & signed screen-prints. Pre-sales can be purchased at tinyurl.com/Fqfposter24

⚜️ Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar ⚜️

🤩 Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop -- built between 1722 and 1732 by Nicolas Touze, is reputed to be the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States. 🤩

⚜️ In 1722, further building is recorded by a realty transfer set down by one Don Andres Almonester. ⚜️

⚜️ The structure and fence are in the old French Provincial Louis XV or Briquette-Entre-Poteauxe style used in French Louisiana. ⚜️

⚜️ The building escaped two great fires at the turn of the 19th Century, due to slate roofing. ⚜️

⚜️ Such slates are presently used by artists as canvases. ⚜️

⚜️ Between 1772 and 1791, the property is believed to have been used by the Lafitte Brothers, Jean and Pierre as a New Orleans base for their Barataria smuggling operation. ⚜️

⚜️ The legend is based on the fact that the property was owned by the family of Simon Duroche a.k.a. Castillon and the wily privateer Captain Rene Beluche. ⚜️

⚜️ Castillon was a rather record-shy adventurer and entrepreneur. Captain Beluche commanded his ship "Spy" in Lafitte's Baratarian fleet. ⚜️

⚜️ Although the owners of the property, Jean Baptiste Dominica Joly LaPorte probably lived on the premises, it is within reason that the Lafittes could have used the place as city base for negotiations with potential buyers of their goods. ⚜️

⚜️ It is unlikely that a wealthy Creole would agree to meet at home on Royal Street. Bourbon and St. Phillip was probably regarded as a safe and convenient neutral ground. ⚜️

⚜️ Like most New Orleans legends, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop is a gumbo of truth and French, Spanish, African, Cajun and American embellishments. ⚜️

Do you know what it means
To miss New Orleans
To miss da delicious food
And Miss Leah’s spicy red beans

I miss da powdered sugar
On ma Morning Call beignets
I miss walkin’ wit ma lady
In Audubon Park on rainy days

I miss ma spearmint snowballs
From Hansen’s and Sal’s
I miss da Bourbon Street strip joints
And drinkin’ Hurricanes wit ma pals

Do you know what it means
To miss New Orleans
To miss da beautiful traditions
And da French Quarter scenes

I miss long rides on da streetcar
And da Preservation Hall jazz
I miss Galatoire’s trout meunière
I miss da sounds like no other city has

I miss da long grey moss
Dat hangs from da oak trees
I miss da New Orleans Saints
I miss Archie and Drew Brees

Do you know what it means
To miss New Orleans
To miss da Mardi Gras Indians
And dem Mardi Gras queens

I miss da crooked politicians
I miss da potholes in da streets
I miss riding da Pontchartrain Zephyr
And dem sugary praline treats

But most of all
I miss da good ole days
Of drinkin’ cold longneck Dixie beer
All night at Miss Mae’s

I love everything about New Orleans
Da good, da bad, and da sleazy
So dat’s what it means to me
When I start missin’ Da Big Easy
