What a special day at the Whitney!

Thanks to a partnership with the New Orleans National Historic Park and the , we had the honor of hosting elders and young culture-keepers representing Louisiana’s Easter Rock and Georgia’s Gullah Geechee Ring Shout traditions. These groups came together for the first time inside the historic Antioch Baptist church at Whitney Plantation. They shared Black spiritual practices that date back to our nation’s antebellum era.

The Winnsboro (La.) Easter Rock Ensemble was recognized as a 2021 NEA National Heritage Fellow for their commitment to sustaining Northern Louisiana’s Easter Rock tradition of gathering the community in their church on Easter Eve to engage in a vigil ritual filled with West African and Christian elements. This includes having participants form a circle then move (or “rock”) in a counterclockwise direction while singing sacred music.

This “ring” aspect is echoed in the ring shout traditions of the Gullah Geechee people of coastal South Carolina and Georgia in which people also move in a counter-clockwise circle using “shuffling” movements combined with call-and-response singing. The Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters hail from Darien, Georgia, and have performed and interpreted the ring shout tradition internationally. It is one of the many African cultural retentions the Gullah Geechee people have proudly long preserved.

Dear New Orleans,

You gave this country our music, dance, and culture, which sustained us through the darkest times. It all started there, in that sacred space. You birthed the foundations of jazz, R&B, and funk. You are the keeper of the rhythm of our lives, ancient and ahead of our time.

And that is the enduring lesson you taught me: In your city, you never walk alone. We walk by tens, hundreds and thousands, in traditions rooted in African rituals.

This city has a majestic way of reminding Black folk of who we were before others tried to redefine us. And so we all walk differently: heads held high, bodies swaying freely, and never, ever alone.

In this spirit of reverence and remembrance, we gather on Super Sunday, a day deeply rooted in your cultural heritage.

We Love You, We Love Us!

For our July/August issue, we are celebrating 30 years of the ESSENCE Festival of Culture and paying tribute to the people of New Orleans with a love letter to the city that has become our home! Get your copy on newsstands on 6/25!

Freedom wasn't just about escaping slavery. For families, it meant a desperate search for loved ones torn apart.

"I never knowed my mother. I was a slave, and my mother was sold from me and her other chilluns. They told me when they sold her, my sister was a holdin' me in her arms. She was standin' behind the big house peekin' 'round the corner and seen the last of her mother. I seen her go, too." —Henri Necaise

But reuniting wasn't easy. With scarce resources, the formerly enslaved people relied on whispers and even slaveholders' names for clues.

Special sections of newspapers called "Lost Friends" carried ads for families desperate to find each other. This wasn't new - it started in the 1830s and continued for decades after slavery ended.

Visit the Whitney Plantation to learn more about these powerful histories and the enduring legacy of those who lived through them.
