We went to the state capital on Tuesday where the Joint Oversight Committee deemed that the proactive notice of intent (NOI) for Louisiana Redfish Management we have been pushing for was “unacceptable.” It was evident only minutes into this hearing that, for reasons other than public comment, the Committee had made their minds up before this hearing even began. Infuriating. Maddening. Depressing.

The House chose not to support a 13-year rebuilding timeline, stating they would instead wager the future of this fishery against a 30-year timeline. The Senate opted not to vote on the NOI. While this Committee may have deemed the most reasonable approach to rebuilding this fishery “unacceptable,” we find questioning the sanctity of sound data and committing to a 30-year timeline “unacceptable.”

Thankfully, this campaign does not end here. The Joint Oversight Committee only has the power to deem an NOI “acceptable” or “unacceptable” before it heads to the Governor’s desk.

Now, a worthy Notice of Intent to rebuild the Louisiana Redfish stock sits on the Governor’s desk alongside thousands of public comments, brand sign-ons and stacks of supporting scientific evidence from the fishery and the industry. And here’s where we need you:

Join us in calling on Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to VETO the decision of the Joint Oversight Committee and approve this NOI to rebuild this world-class fishery in a fair, equitable, and timely manner.

Today is the last day to sign the ASGA letter in support of changing the limits for redfish in Louisiana—1988 was the last time the limits were changed! Between massive recreational overfishing, the industrial pogie boats destroying everything with impunity and bow fishing running amok, Louisiana redfish are taking a beating.

Tripletail on the flats??? I’ll admit when I first saw it swimming in the shallows on its side I thought it was a sick flounder! In Louisiana we say lagniappe for an unexpected gift of something extra. After George from Virginia caught his first fat little redfish and his first alligator gar he got this little lagniappe. *******************************

As it was blowing 25-30 mph and dark cloudy today, I told Matt from Detroit that flyfishing was a lost cause. He was game for a little adventure so we went spin fishing instead and had a great time. This photo is unedited—what beautiful spring colors!

Still feeling funny about forgetting to talk a bit about black drum on the podcast with so here is my favorite pic of the sometimes maligned black drum from the last couple months. I love black drum like I love all fish and they can be just as challenging and sporty as redfish with shot placement perhaps being even more important. They live longer, grow bigger and pull hard!**************************

Last month I had a booth at The Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival and Tom Rosenbauer caught the end of my presentation and invited me on the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast! It’s kinda Tom’s fault I got into this— I read his Orvis Fly Fishing guide as a teenager and down the rabbit hole I went. We grow to the company we keep; I am both fortunate and grateful. Tom’s humility, humor, intelligence and expertise in all things fly fishing is very special for our sport. The podcast comes out today. Tom wanted to talk about red fishing basics in Louisiana so I did my best. Afterwards, I laughed at myself a little for completely forgetting to mention one of the key species we catch on fly down here. First person to tell me what it is gets a free camo MarshOnTheFly hat.
