Today is indeed Presidents' Day, though it's important to note that the official federal holiday is still called Washington's Birthday.

It was originally established to honor George Washington, the first president of the United States, and his birthday on February 22nd. Over time, the holiday has become more broadly associated with celebrating all U.S. presidents and their contributions to the country.

Curious about Presidential visits to New Orleans? Nearly every U.S. President since McKinley has visited New Orleans. Read about all the history from the Historic New Orleans Collection website here:

Happy Lundi Gras!

Lundi Gras, which means "Fat Monday" in French,
is the day before Mardi Gras, which is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. While not an official day of Mardi Gras, Lundi Gras has become a popular day for pre-Mardi Gras celebrations, especially in New Orleans.

The New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl victory in 2010 was a truly historic moment, not just for the franchise but for the city of New Orleans as well.

Super Bowl XLIV was played in Miami Gardens, Florida between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. This 31-17 victory by the Saints was the first win in franchise history and the first major league championship for the state of Louisiana.

The Saints' victory came just four years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, making it a powerful symbol of resilience and hope for the city. The Super Bowl win remains one of the most cherished moments in New Orleans Saints history.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is known for its
massive crowds, with over 1 million visitors traveling to the city to celebrate. The crowds are especially large during the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday, the peak of the celebrations.

With that in mind, we have a limited tour schedule. Between navigating through the people lined up for parades and the excess noise, it impedes the tour experience.

We wish everyone a fun and safe Mardi Gras and hope to see you on tour after next week!

On this day in history, let's turn it up to hear the story of the infamous "Bourbon Street Bust" of the Grateful Dead! This incident is woven into Deadhead lore and even found its way into one of their most beloved songs,"Truckin'."

On January 31st, 1970, after a concert at The Warehouse with Fleetwood Mac, members of the Grateful Dead were arrested back at their hotel on drug charges. The timing and circumstances were suspicious, leading some to believe they were set up. Lenny Hart, the band's manager at the time, even called it "very peculiar."

Despite the bust, the band managed to post bail and perform two more shows in New Orleans. They even added an extra gig to raise money for legal fees. Luckily, most charges were eventually dropped. However, the incident left its mark, both financially and creatively.

The experience undoubtedly fueled some angst that seeped into "Truckin'," with its famous opening line: "Busted, down on Bourbon Street/ Set up, like a bowling pin/ Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin/ They just won't let you be…" The song became a powerful anthem for feeling misunderstood and targeted by authority.

Let the colors fly!

Mardi Gras wouldn't be the same without its iconic purple, green, and gold. But have you ever wondered what these vibrant hues symbolize?

Purple: Representing justice and royalty, it was once a costly dye, making it a symbol of luxury and power.

Green: Symbolizing faith, hope, and renewal, it's also connected to spring, which follows the Lenten season after Mardi Gras.

Gold: Reflecting wealth, prosperity, and abundance, it further strengthens the association with royalty and high value.

These colors weren't always officially linked to Mardi Gras, though. While a popular story claims they were chosen to honor a visiting Russian Grand Duke, historians believe their use goes back further, possibly influenced by European heraldry traditions.

No matter their origin, purple, green, and gold have become synonymous with the spirit of Mardi Gras. They adorn everything from parade floats and costumes to king cakes and beads, creating a kaleidoscope of joy and celebration.

If you've ever caught a large coin during Mardi Gras after yelling out "Throw me something, Mister!", you may have wondered what it is that you caught. Let's take a look at the history of Mardi Gras doubloons!

In 1959, a local artist from New Orleans named H. Alvin Sharpe came up with a new throw for the King of Rex - an aluminum coin similar to the Spanish "dublon". The captain of Rex, Darwin Schriever Fenner, recognized the potential of the throw and ordered 3,000 doubloons for Mardi Gras that year. By the late 1960s, doubloons had become popular across various Mardi Gras parades. They feature the krewe's emblem and year on one side, and the theme on the other.

As the popularity of doubloons increased, their shape, color and material also evolved, and they became collectibles. However, overproduction of the treasured throw led to a decline in its value.

While doubloons are still a cherished throw symbolizing luck and prosperity, they are not as valuable as the original doubloons from the 1960s.

During Christmastime in New Orleans, one of the most notable events is the appearance of Mr. Bingle. This holiday mascot was first introduced by the Maison Blanche department store on Canal Street in 1947. Mr. Bingle is a playful snowman characterized by his candy cane wand and his hat, which is an upside-down ice cream cone. Initially, he was created as a beloved character for puppet shows hosted in the Maison Blanche building. In 1949, a 50-foot-high Mr. Bingle was added to the front of the store, becoming the most iconic holiday decoration of the year.

Mr. Bingle was so popular that in 1998, Dillard's Inc. purchased the Maison Blanche chain, and Mr. Bingle dolls and merchandise became available to purchase. Mr. Bingle remains a fixture during the holidays at Celebration in the Oaks. Ask any New Orleanian about Mr. Bingle and they may even sing you the jingle!

Celebrating Christmas in New Orleans means spending it with family, friends, and loved ones with the historically French celebration of the Réveillon meal. These large, multi-course meals are often celebrated in restaurants around the Crescent City, and many restaurants offer them all month long as a way to honor this tradition. With rich food ranging from turtle soup to gumbo with crème brûlée to top off the night, you won't have much room left for milk and cookies afterward!
