Super cool!

Do you like dolphins as much as we do? If so, you might be excited to hear about our newest volunteer citizen science opportunity!!!

Marine Discovery Center is now training volunteers to be part of the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Dolphin Spotter Program. This is a land-based citizen science project which uses photo identification to catalog dolphins using dorsal fins, including individual nicks and scars. Each dolphin is given a 4-letter identification code, and from there scientists can collect data on dolphin life histories, movement patterns, health, and human impacts.

This program has two different types of opportunities for volunteers. The first involves monitoring a Dolphin Spotting station game camera (including obtaining, downloading, sorting, and sending the photos to Harbor Branch scientists). The second involves routinely photographing dolphins from a land-based location of your choice over a 30 minute span.

Dolphin spotters play an essential role in this study and willl greatly contribute to the acquisition of data from the Northern part of the Indian River Lagoon. To participate in this program, you must first become an MDC Volunteer - you can learn more at https://marinediscoverycenter.org/volunteer/
